As an introverted person, Subastian Tan feels that dance is a way of expressing himself without boundaries. After time, it developed into a gateway for him to understand the perspective of others and use it as a force for change.
He believes that youths of today can form intergenerational bonds with our seniors by simply listening to their stories and be genuinely curious about their experiences – and while there’s comfort in finding similarities, discovering differences can spark interest as well!
“As a dancer, I have fond memories of the Somerset Belt where I found spaces to make friends, develop my craft and discover new opportunities.
Recently, I did a project called “What’s Your Take” where youths came together to create a canvas of our imagined Singaporean skyline, and the canvas was put up at the front of Youth Corps building. The Somerset Belt then became a reason for youths to gather, to share ideas and imagine the future together.”
