Problem Statement

When it comes to addressing single use plastics, reusing packaging and containers has become an increasingly popular option for sustainable consumers. However, adoption rate of reusable containers among the general public is still low.

How can we further increase the uptake of reusable containers?

Project Description

TapaoWare aims to promote sustainable habits by redefining the user experience of personal takeaway containers.

The team has designed TapaoWare, a collapsible container which draws inspiration from traditional Japanese origami art, that brings together art and functionality into one personal takeaway lunchbox. With its more streamlined size and fun folding design, the team hopes the general public will be more willing to adopt the use of personal takeaway containers.

lightweight - i like stainless steel because it washes up easily, doesn\'t break, and can take hot stuff; double-walled - so we can carry it easily even with hot food in it; leakproof; versatile - preferably an easy, innovate way for all kind of tapao scenarios - rectangular one for the main food, a soup container, and some tiny small ones for dressings and sauces.

I actually use them every time I takeaway food! (as long as I\'m at home before going out to dabao) But if I speak for my family members who are less inclined to do so, I\'d say it\'s because of inconvenience due to the bulkiness of the containers (especially if they are bringing multiple out) as well as having to wash them afterwards.

In response to "How Can We Improve?"

caveat: i bring containers to tapao my food 90% of the time, so i may or may not be your target audience - depending on your project\'s objective. i think the idea to make bringing containers cool and fun is great! We definitely need a mindset shift on this. However, i think we should keep some main principles in mind to market it to the mass audience: affordable, light-weight, easy to clean, versatile. Affordable: Personally for me, I collect many different containers at home and in office so I will not be caught in a situation when I need to dabao but don\'t have a container lying around. I think being prepared is the best way to reduce the inconvenience of bringing containers, reducing the barrier to entry. So the price point is important to encourage consumers to buy enough for their needs, and weave in this habit in their daily life. Light-weight, easy to clean: Bunched these two together because they are about the material. One of the main pain points of bringing own container is the wash up after eating, so the material should ideally not trap oil and grease. I really like stainless steel for this. Porcelain and glass works too but they\'re more bulky. Versatile: as mentioned in my previous answer, the tapaoware should meet 90% of our dabao needs. Not really sure how the Origami idea can work but is there a way we can reconfigure our tapaoware depending on our meal? i.e. Chicken rice will need a tiny, carved out space to put the condiments (chilli, soy sauce), wanton mee should ideally allow us to portion out a separate space for the soup? One other idea on promoting your idea: I think your publicity materials should also focus on the benefits of using your own tapaoware! Some perks I can think of is you don\'t have to worry about the cleanliness of the store\'s own takeaway containers, if your container is large enough some stalls may subconsciously give more portion, and at some places you get discount! sidenote: love the name! what a cute pun of dabao and tupperware. All the best!

Current market is oligopolised by many brands, what can you provide to stand out? Aim for a certain niche area in the market to succeed, all the best!

function > form is very important here as the market is already saturated with faux-environmentally-friendly companies.

A lunchbox that is collapsible into different Japanese origami art design. By adding on a compatible Furoshiki with beautiful designs, it can be used to carry the lunchbox when it is full. Otherwise, the lunchbox can collapse into a flat case and stored into the Furoshiki.

Love the name \"TaopaoWare\"! Learning from the tote-bag phenomenon, it would be important to focus on mindful consumerism beyond the sole purpose of reducing single-use plastic through using our own containers. The math of how many times a lunchbox needs to be used before it is effectively less wasteful than single-use containers should also be done to ensure that it is not just less wasteful by perspective but actually backed by statistics.

Would it be useful to focus on the functionality aspect? Is it possible for the lunch box to be folded in such a way that it is as compact as a card holder? This would greatly improve portability (e.g. keep in wallet). All the best!!

Food for thought: Many see personal reusable containers as a means to reduce the amount of single-use disposable waste generated. But if people join the wave and try using a reusable container but such effort is not sustained, would there be a greater overall waste generated?

The aim of this initiative is a very important one but I am a little confused as to how it can reduce the plastic wastage. Is it going to be workshop where they fold origami’s and learn about reusable lunch boxes? You guys could maybe give them reliable sources on where to buy greaseproof reusable lunch boxes. Or any other alternatives as well

I think the movement of bringing your own containers have definitely caught up with the Singaporean crowd, so I really like this initiative! Ease of storage is something that definitely is a huge plus factor for me, since kitchen storage in Singapore isn\'t the biggest. If you could find a way to incorporate the Japanese art of origami and use that to ensure more efficient storage, that would be amazing. Good luck!

This idea is not new, there is a lot of such offering in Sg already. So the key question is. Why is reusable not being adopted in Sg despite being offered. Rather than focusing on creating another new fun lunchbox, maybe work on the perception of bringing ning it out or carrying it around as a first step. Im not sure if being fun will be a help, convenience maybe.

Without a prototype, it seems like you have the sky as the limit at this time! Would love a design that does not introduce more resources into circulation (perhaps reuse already existing items?), and something that is easy to wash, without nooks and crannies that curry gravy from caipng can creep into and stain it yellow.

Sounds interesting. Team should consider the durability of the material for the lunchboxes, given the constant folding required.

Not sure what you plan to make your lunchboxes out of, but if it\'s foldable I assume it\'s silicone? Silicone is a pain to clean and definitely not a good recommendation for tapao boxes. I have the greatest success with glass containers (but these are very heavy).

Sometimes people are hesitant to use reusable boxes due to needing to have to carry a bag to put it into. maybe problem can be avoided by making the container itself more easy to carry just on its own so it’s convenient

It’s not very clear what we’re hoping to expect based on the simple proposal itself of combining origami with a lunchbox. It would be best to go into more detail or develop a visual aid to allow us to better understand the concept being presented.
