Problem Statement

70% of the global population cannot afford STEAM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math). There is a severe lack of relevant expertise in developing countries and traditional education models do not support innovation.

How might we make STEAM Education accessible to all?

Project Description

Stick ‘Em aims to make STEAM accessible to all who wish to be technologically literate.

The team will develop intuitive and affordable STEAM education kits which include 3D printed connectors, disposable chopsticks and an Internet-of-Things (IoT) box. This gives young innovators the tools to prototype and bring their ideas to life, which helps to nurture design thinking and creative problem solving skills.

The team will also develop a Stick ‘Em online platform which will have educational videos on how to use the different tools in the kit, interactive user tournuments and chatrooms where users can share their creations and knowledge with one another.

It looks cool on the surface to kids and children, while for parents, it is a good way to get my kid started and interested on STEM,

In response to "What method do you think is best for learning STEAM?"

Definetly hands-on learning. There are plenty, PLENTY, of ways to excite children through hands-on learning and get them interested to learn about hte theory behind things as STEAM seems to be heavily dependent on experimentations and discovery.

I don\'t have a child, but I think the world is moving to IoT that is without a doubt, allowing children to understand STEAM related programmes not only enabling children to understand the logic behind all the IoT (eg: robotics) magics, also allow adults - who participating along with their child to learn it too! and through the process, it allow parents to bond with children even more! Win - Win - Win situation!

In response to "How Can We Improve?"

I would say that you can go beyond your project and start to design STEAM resources and kits for children with special needs. It is indeed a more niche market, but has a great potential for growth. Another possible collaboration to further increase your reach would be tuition centres. Great way to reach your target audience.

Team may wish to clarify the specific barriers to access of Singapore\'s primary school students to STEAM education which is currently unclear. The education kits are interesting, though of limited utility if similar tasks and activities are already being done in the classroom.

This solution seems to already work well and benefit a lot of children, however how can you expand this concept? Perhaps not only inspiring youth through hands- on experience but also inspiring them through stories, quick lessons (think Tasty videos where they\'re short but show you how to make the end product) and roadshows where they can try these kits out for a short period of time? Perhaps also integrating a digital/online component might help add interest to older primary school students, for example Nintendo Labo which encourages creativity and Game Builder Garage which teaches coding in a fun manner. Great project! Interesting and interactive, good impact on kids :)

I thought the idea of engaging youths with education kits is interesting. Looking at the tools provided it could help them venture into prototyping which is a starter for them. And maybe if they want a follow-up of the kit, a secondary kit is possible for those who wants to advance deep into their learning.

I believe that your solution would definitely instill interest on STEAM At an early age for children. But are you guys planning to run this programme for a long time? Because I think that would really do a lot of good and create a greater impact. So you guys can definitely think about charging a small fee for the kits. You guys could also conduct interesting talks with fascinating demos that children and even teenagers can attend in order to pique their interests in STEAM. Brilliant demos are literally at infinite for the STEM industries.

In response to "How Can We Improve?"

I think what can be done to improve for you guys would be to try to develop an ecosystem that actually fits the needs of the schools that you are targeting. By talking to the teachers and asking them about how they approach their students when it comes to STEAM education. Also validating your learning hypothesis with a small group of students would be a really good sign that it works. With that schools will be able to properly appreciate the value that Stick \'Em provides and take up on the offerings that you guys have. Schools are well connected and if one takes it up and loves it, the others would be inclined to do the same. All the best guys, this is good work and I really hope to see this succeed!

I think this is a great initiative to help introduce STEAM to developing countries! In addition to building their personal projects with these kits, the students should have a chance and avenue to share their innovative creations to inspire others in community. As others get inspired, many will realise that such possibilities of STEAM education are not out of reach. To build up design thinking and problem solving skills, the kits can be crafted such that it would be focused on solving issues of developing countries such as energy, water and food. This would allow their innovations to be relevant and potentially useful for their community. Good job! :)

I think all schools can have such programmes in the curriculum and students can be encouraged to practice it more often through competition, more modules for learning and it can be link to how it helps students in their future studies.

I am a IoT hobbyist that owns some Raspberry Pi, I think while Children are playing + learning on the STEAM hardware building, parents also able to learn (ALOT) when going through the STEAM software, figuring out logics to make robots to move in a certain way. Hence the STEAM hardware kit and software needs to be intuitive enough to keep both parents and children to engage with it, while maintaining a VERY user friendly GUI (Graphical User Interface). Using ARM boards like Raspberry Pi Zero could be a good start as it is very budget friendly. Only down side will be challenging initial setup, which again I think it will be a good learning experience for an adult parents to understand more about things like Operating Systems and etc.

One question is whether the workshops done are funded by grants or being paid for by client! If there is demand proven, then this could potentially be a business/social enterprise. One idea for the social enterprise model is to have tiered pricing - charging schools and other paying clients while doing free workshops for children from disadvantaged backgrounds. It might also be helpful for the team to do a competitor analysis as there are several large training companies providing STEAM education programs to primary schools. Figuring out what is the niche of your project and focusing on building that unique selling proposition will place your project in a better position for longer term growth!! all the best!! :)

I think one really good way to improve would be to partner with local start ups as well as big companies to organize different hackathons and competitions for students to come up with innovative prototypes and to cultivate their interest. There can be attractive prizes as well such as future internship opportunities as well as different technology gadgets such as Ipad or like drones to help entice more students participation.
