Problem Statement

Fast fashion waste accounts for 92 million tonnes (2015*) of waste produced annually. As the fashion industry continues to grow globally, the amount of waste increases as well.

How can we educate and promote slow and conscientious buying habits in fashion while being ethical?

Project Description

Reclé aims to promote slow fashion by offering their customers a sustainable clothing option that is also fashionable.

The team hopes to design versatile and long-lasting designs that will prevent impulse and disposable purchases. All products will be manufactured with recycled or organic fabric. The team will also make sure to engage an ethical factory that provides production workers with a fair living wage and working conditions.

Clothes brands can collect old clothes in exchange for discounts for their new clothes items. It encourages recycling and donation of old clothes to organisations.

Having proceeds from one day of the month go towards an established charity. I also think it’s important that brands encourage consumers to use what they have first and buy only if they really need it- that’s ultimately the more ethical way of consuming.

Many shops are also offering designs that allows a variety of ways to wear the item, thus it is important that you can ensure there will be a continuous supply of ideas in producing different designs of clothes that allows variety of ways to wear. Other than clothes, it might be good to look at bags, jackets etc. The quality of clothes manufactured is extremely important as well.

Great project to focus on producing fashion sustainably! Would it be useful to complement your brand by offering unique sales model e.g. clothing rental? This could be similar to Zalora’s no fuss return, and you could allow (1) purchase at full price; (2) refund of 90% price upon return after 1 week (effectively rental cost at 10% each week). Such a sale and return model could reduce wastage, especially if the younger generation do not wish to have two tiktok/instagram videos wearing the same piece of clothing. This “shared wardrobe” concept may better differentiate your brand based on its mission to prevent impulse and disposable purchases.

I personally think that , people choose to throw away clothes to stay close to the trends and having a mindset which is that “can’t wear same clothes for more than 5 times”. It is an inevitable truth that people tend to look down upon people who wear same clothes for a lot of times. Even if it’s difficult to get rid of that mindset, it’s important for you guys to spread as much awareness as possible. Also I would really love if a lot of fashion Which are eco-friendly.

I believe that you guys can improve by partnering up with bigger textile companies to see if you guys can source sustainable products in bulk at a cheaper price and work with them to lower down the costs of production by using their factory and pre-engaged vendors to ensure that the costs of these sustainable products would not be inflated.

To make sure people can see where their money is going, and that it isn’t greenwashing, it might be good to have a page providing transparent information on all the fabrics, manufacturers and suppliers involved. Plus points if you can see how much money is going to charity too if that initiative is pursued.

Team can consider collecting recycled clothes and giving tokens to donors (who can then use the tokens to redeem products), to provide them with a closed-loop experience.

I think to have fashion really slow down is to encourage people to stop buying. It doesn\'t matter if the fabric is sustainable, if the practice is still \'buy and throw away\' it will not stop the waste issue. Maybe consider things like upcycling workshops/having people come into contact with the clothes-making process/swapping before buying.

Maybe breakdown on the costs and profits, and include transparency for your consumers to know where the additional cost is going. (Sustainable clothing which can be worn in different ways could be pricier). Include photos, videos, montages in your factory\'s process so that consumers can see visually where their money is going and that your product is justified. - Singi Das, singi.das.7@gmail.com

When it comes to fast fashion especially during this time and age where e-commerce is prevalent thus promoting people to shop more. I feel that there needs to be more awareness on the side effects of fast fashion to counter attack this issue. Government initiatives on sustainability materials should also be looked into. For example; promoting grants to such organizations that stick to ethical practices.
