Problem Statement

There is insufficient personal finance education in our school curriculum and existing financial literacy platforms are not usually targeted towards a youth audience.

How can we empower youths with the knowledge and confidence to make financial decisions for their future?

Project Description

money&me aims to provide a safe space for youth aged 17-25 to kickstart conversations about money.

The team has developed a hybrid programme which incorporates physical ideation workshops and mentoring groups as well as online mentoring Zoom sessions. Throughout the 6-week programme, participants will learn how to set financial goals, save and spend money responsibly. They will also learn about credit loans, insurance and investing.

In the future, the team aims to digitise the content they have created and increase their reach through the use of social media. They also hope to increase the scale of their workshops and build a pipeline of mentors with diverse backgrounds.

No specific person so as to say, but i do envy people who have clear financial milestones. More specifically, the \"early retirement gurus\". Its reassuring to know that financial freedom is achievable in our current society, and it motivates me to work toward that, and helps motivate me through the sacrifices that i need to make.

I do not have a specific person in mind, but my financial role model would be a successful financial advisor. Financial advisors are trained and certified in various aspects of financial planning, including wealth accumulation, risk management, estate planning and retirement planning. They are a great source of knowledge regarding personal finance management. Perhaps your group could consider working with financial planning agencies.

I really like the concept of your app, and i do find the content to be very relevant and useful, especially since the content in question are not as accessible to the younger generation currently. I didnt get started in caring about my finances until the people around me brought awareness to it. Even then, it was really hard to distinguish valuable advice from predatory actors, who are trying to preach the way to earn \'a quick buck\'. Thus, i think if there is a platform to curate the content, it would be attractive to users.

Team can review how the proposed app complements or value-adds above and beyond existing solutions like Glassdoor. Also, given that the app platform does not seem to add specific value to the product, having a mobile optimized website may reduce barriers to access for this proposal.

In response to "How Can We Improve?"

Overall, I feel that your project is relevant to today\'s youth and will improve financial literacy amongst students. I too believe that financial literacy can and should be inculcated in youths, even before they enter the working world. I shall list several areas of improvement for your project below: Firstly, to supplement the gamification of your app, your group could consider including the growth of a pet/plants to represent the \"level\" of your users. This could enhance the aesthetics of the app and possibly draw users in due to the cuteness of the avatars. Moreover, it can promote a somewhat competitive environment where friends compete to get the best pets or most bountiful garden. Youths could benefit from this game as they would be digesting bite-sized financial concepts as they grow their pet/garden. This can differentiate your app from similar financial websites such as Seedly. You could also add in a \"Friend Request\" and \"Chat\" feature to aid in levelling up the avatar. This can promote your app amongst users\' friends and encourage users to start networking and establish connections, a skill that is integral in the workforce. Secondly, to create a unique branding for your app, your group could stick to a particular colour scheme and art style. Pages like thewokesalaryman have created brand image because of their unique art style. Thirdly, you could include recommendations for short Tiktok or YouTube videos addressing financial literacy, maybe even consider creating animated videos! Youths are more inclined to watch short videos and animations, as compared to reading chunks of words in an article. I wish your group all the best in your endeavours!

I think it\'s a great idea because many students like me are interested in learning how to manage our finances. However, there are already many similar apps or platforms available that have the same function like seedly or financial youtubers creating content to share with their viewers. Therefore, I think the app needs to have its own unique features that stands out from the rest.

Another financial topic that people think a lot about nowadays is investing. It would be great if you guys could create a scamless safe space where people can share their knowledge on these kinds of topics as well. I am concerned that this information might be misused or might be used to spark toxic debates. So you guys can think about ways you could prevent this from happening.

I like the idea of using game and rewards to encourage users to learn financial knowledge. With better financial knowledge, users can make wiser decision about investment, savings and spending. Can get more partners to sign up to encourage financial literacy and also allow users to share knowledge with each other in the app chat forum.

Could consider to complement the app with workshops, reading materials. Great to have partners on board like Citi Foundation, Mendaki. Need to commit to standing out among the many existing financial literacy blogs / influencers (e.g. wokesalaryman, sgbudgetbabe) - perhaps this may be more age group, youth oriented. Like how minimizing spending, debts, holidays can go a long way after graduation...

What differs this app from Google? Any kind of personalisation for the user to keep coming back weekly? Or any kind of activities to engage a learning point? Maybe some weekly fun facts about SG financial system to allow the users to be more informative about what\'s happening in our country? Some possible additions to the app would make this app more useful to the users.

You can perhaps think about the revenue generation method for this application as mentors would expect to be financed (unless they are volunteers). What credentials should one have to qualify as a mentor? Also, will the community engagement platform be regulated by anyone? (as there might be misuse of the platform to communicate other agendas/market other unrelated products) Finally, is extrinsic motivation in the form of reward systems sustainable in the long-run? Will youths develop long-term confidence through the usage of this application? Overall it is a well-rounded idea with potential for growth.

Financial advice can be very subjective and different for different individual, and also for different income levels. Am more curious how the platforms will make sure that youths from different backgrounds can understand the financial advice - for example, the way the advice is curated, will it be understandable to the layman? Which also means that your \"relevant to the unique life stage and needs of users\" has to be very diverse? Or very accurate. Am curious how the platform will achieve the aims of being a \"safe space\" because I can\'t see it from the description now. \"Power of community\" --> does it mean that sharing information will entitle the users to gain more points? (Eg. shopee)

For a small team, creating an app from scratch might be an overwhelming amount of work. beyond UI/UX, there is also user acquisition in an already crowded app space.. perhaps the team can explore creating a prototype on a telegram group to test out the demand for such a content platform. There are existing platforms and groups on social media like reddit and facebook and telegram. I am not sure if there is a significant value-add or differentiator that would make people jump to your app instead... perhaps more research can be done to understand the user journey and needs before jumping into an app as it is a huge investment of time and money. Also, the sustainability of such an app will mean a constant churn of content to keep up with changes in the economy, govt regulations, etc and that would require a team and funding. the revenue source for this project is unclear.

You identified a real issue that youth value salary as one of the top three factors in careers. This is in accordance to the latest youth survey by TODAY. I am unsure what does financial decisions mean in this context. You might want to elaborate more on how does this relates to financial decisions? It sounds like it is a platform to guide youth on negotiation of salary based on the work.

I think that this idea is similar to a seedly and a reddit focusing on FIRE. (Financial independence, retire early). It is also to my firm conviction that the app could possibly have a forum of sorts to let people discuss money and income so that people are more well aware and informed on the differing income levels in various industries as well as what are the latest investment trends so that fellow singaporeans can learn from each other. Also, it will be good to have articles relating to personal finance as well and budgeting, insurance, credit cards, stuffs that are imperative to the everyday worker and how to be more financially savvy and prudent. Overall, keep up the good work! :)

In response to "How Can We Improve?"

Love the mobile app to track financials and recommend how to spend. Would also love a \"forum\" so people can find out more about salaries and experiences about the different occupations in Singapore, where perhaps people can make posts and comment. The idea can be played around with. Would make the app more personal I think. Overall love the work!
