Insect Feed Technologies

Problem Statement

By 2050, there will be 10 billion people to feed but land remains limited for agriculture and livestock farming.

At this rate, how can we meet the demand of food required for the increasing population?

Project Description

Insect Feed Technologies (IFT) is a green startup which aims to use insects, more specifically the black soldier flies, as a reliable, cost-effective and sustainable source of protein to feed animals.

Through insect farming, an emerging practice where waste is fed directly to insects to turn them into higher value insect mass that are rich in proteins, fats and chitin, the team hopes to use insects as sustainable inputs for a variety of sectors, most notably in high quality animal feeds demanded by the aquaculture sector & premium pet food markets.

IFT will be conducting more R&D to ensure their product is able to remain relevant and encourage adoption for public use.

I only knew that insects had protein/some nutritional value.

In response to "How much do you know about insect excrement as an all-natural, highly enriched, sustainable fertiliser for plants?"

well, insects too die and thus decay, thus naturally becomes fertiliser. Just that it takes a while.

Insect farming is more energy efficient than conventional animal farmers as insects are better at utilising calories

Ecologically, insects are the natural decomposers that breakdown dead matter to recycle nutrients in the soil.

It probably started off with using insect protein to feed human beings! However, I\'ve been contributing to Black soldier fly facility - it\'s cool that the larvae can break down food waste to use as a fertilizer at the vegetable farm at Tampines! While the larvae then is food to the fish! Such interesting ecosystem.

In response to "How Can We Improve?"

This is a great idea by the team and excited to see how it can complement and strengthen our food supply chain. Apart from solely focusing on launching the insect production line for food supply, we need to educate the public on this new food source in order to increase demand. If the team comes up with an alternative supply of food by successfully launching this idea, demand must complement in order to make this solution work. As such, I propose 3 suggestions for the team to consider: 1. Educational Campaign to raise public awareness on Edible insects - Have roadshows/online talks in Tertiary institutions to share on this emerging edible insect idea to infuse into food - Engage Key Opinion Leaders (e.g. Micro Food Bloggers) and sponsor them insect-infused food to feature on their social media, to reach out to public 2. Partnerships with Cafe - Pitch to cafe to use insect-infused products in their menu offers by selling them at a discounted rate - Launch exclusive-dishes using insect-infused products to incentivise public to try 3. Engage Animal Owner Community - Pitch to Pet cafes to feed their in-house pets with insect-infused pet treats or give free treats to pet owners that visit - Engage Animal Key Opinion leaders to feature these treats

Conduct a life cycle analysis to understand the cost, carbon and energy efficiency of the proposed pipeline. Consider collecting food waste from a reliable sources that are known to generate food waste (supermarkets that discards “ugly” or damaged fruits and vegetable, military camp that generates surplus of food, etc) and have a efficient strategy to transport and process such waste as feeds for the insect farms.

Go into worm farming also. They ingest manure into clean, natural fertiliser for plants. You use them as fish baits. They can tackle the methane emission problems. For insect protein into meal and oil has a taboo connotation that you have to address cautiously. Not many people will take to eating insects as the next food source.Due to the dietry ,religious, cultural restrictions that you have to address. Why not create the world first insect cremation facility in the world?It\'s helps reduce the carbon footprint of cremation and burial.

Would it be useful to also conceptualise how insects can be farmed efficiently (e.g. helps to decompose food waste)? If the above step is not resource intensive, then it could be value adding to systematically cultivate insects for proteins and fertilisers for farms. This research is interesting. All the best!

I would suspect the problem with availability of food (Worldwide) is not due to shortage but due to 1) Uneven distribution 2) Lack of a more efficient transport/storage system. As such, while the idea is interesting, the team would need to think about 1) Costs 2)Sustainability 3) How portable the system to reduce the need of transportation

In response to "How Can We Improve?"

I think just judging from my responses above, I dare extrapolate that the general public are pretty much unaware of the use of insects of fertiliser and feed. I feel that the following needs to be done - 1) Raise awareness of using insects of fertiliser and feed through research and studies. If you can convince an agriculture company to use insects, or at least pioneer a project where certain produce is fertilised using insects, even better. But, you need to get the idea out there long enough such that people are familiar with it, even if they may not be comfortable with it. 2) Once you have familiarity with the concept pat down, you need to get people to be comfortable with it. There is still quite a bit of fear surrounding insects. Perhaps think of activities that will help people overcome this fear - or at least, reduce their fear. Perhaps this can be done by distributing insect fertiliser to households on a first come first serve basis. I believe households that do gardening will take up your offer, and it is a good start! Using insect fertiliser for plants that aren\'t produce is a good first step :) 3) Be prepared that public acceptance may take longer than you anticipate. It is a novel concept that will take a while for people to get on the train with, so don\'t lose hope. Good luck!

1) Look into the possibility of using insects (mealworms) to break down plastic polymers and whether these insects are safe for human or animal consumption while on a plastic diet 2) look into the range of different insects that can be used, aside from black soldier flies 3) look into how modular insect farms can be designed such that it can be installed in every household or neighbourhood so household food waste can be broken down into frass for use as compost, without emitting odour
