Problem Statement

Singapore is among the world’s most competitive nations to work in.

In this highly competitive environment, how can we help fresh graduates and students stand out among the job seeker pool?

Project Description

Glance.sg aims to be a local Talent Matching platform that connects talents with the right skillset to companies with a need.

The team will partner with schools and higher learning institutions to empower their youth by providing a platform to turn their school-taught skills into a side hustle, allowing them to discover their true potential, broaden their portfolio and gain industry level experience all while they are still in school.

At the same time, the platform will offer students a place to seek career/skills related mentorships and receive feedback on their work to upskill themselves.

From the students perspective, causal or part time work may not need any feedback if it does not provide any learning points for their career journey. Other forms of check in, such as mental health and attitude might be more relevant in this case.

That would be a resounding, Yes. Nothing would be more useful than constructive criticism or an honest praise to give you an idea of whether the job is well done. Communication is essential is any form of relationship.

Yes, definitely. Personally, I like feedback given to me even if it\'s bad as I can know where can I improve on. Although I might felt unhappy at times for the feedback I had. But feedback is necessary especially in a working industry to know how you can work more efficiently. Someone who can give you feedback could means that the person notice about your strength and weaknesses, and want to help to push you better.

The projects sound interesting and those available on the website seem to offer gig or freelance work. How does the team ensure that students are receiving suitable mentoring guidance. In addition, does the team see value in integrating the learning done in these gig projects with what is being learnt in school? Barring which, does the team envision these side gigs detracting or distracting from the academic endeavors in the classroom?

It is a great solution to the problem that’s being handled here. However, for personal experience, I believe the reason behind companies providing good opportunities not wanting students in school to intern with them is the fact that school students lack of sufficient knowledge. So in order to be fair for the companies as well, you guys could consider training students before hand or something and then let them enter the internship. In this way, the companies can gain value as well.

School taught skills may not be adequate or acceptable for actual work requirements, perhaps focus on making a more useful internship type of support instead of labelling it as a side hustle with no proper guidance, experience or substance from the students.

I appreciate how the initiative provides an income stream for students hoping to monetize their knowledge and skills!! One concern that I have is that clients may not trust the freelancers to complete a project, especially if it is of critical importance to the organisation/company. Maybe one thing that the team can consider is for clients to be able to give students/freelancers a review in text and a rating out of 5. this would allow clients to determine the credibility and professionalism of the students applying for a task/project. Another concern is that freelancers might be paid late or even not paid at all due to various reasons. maybe there are be mechanisms in place that protect freelancers such as the platform can hold onto the sum until the task is completed and if the client choose to pull out mid-way, the freelancer gets 50% or a certain %. On receiving feedback on the platform, some questions i have are : who will be providing this feedback and how will these people be motivated to give feedback? feedback is critical for improvement. maybe one idea is to encourage senior/ more experienced freelancers to mentor the newer/inexperienced freelancers by giving them reputation points that show up on their profile- this helps them with getting more clients. as clients see them as trustworthy.

Apart from matching which can be done manually or systematic. The main issue is to ensure a susustainable relationship that have small goals to be achieved. Having a big goal might seems good at the start but it takes time for achievements to be seen and this can slowly wear out the initial enthusiasm and eventually lead to drop out

You may consider taking it a step further to include schools with disabled-learning. It\'s about providing equitable solutions to the wide spectrum of learning capabilities of the youth, and empowering them with opportunities to be the best version of themselves.

Focus more on constructive feedback The goal of constructive feedback is to provide information to an individual in a way that encourages them to improve or amend their behavior. This is significant because it promotes personal and professional development. Constructive feedback, for example, can: Boost employee morale. Reduce the amount of ambiguity about expectations and current performance. Give the person receiving comments a fresh perspective and useful information. Influence a person\'s behavior in a positive way

Perhaps to make job matching easier, an algorithm can be designed to match jobs that the student has described/ jobs that the student wants. This algorithm can also be introduced in schools to make it more accessible for students. Overall I think the work you guys have done will will definitely make job-seeking so much easier for students!

I think Glance.sg can improve by showing what is their unique selling proposition (USP) as currently there are many other similar platforms like this. Also, I feel that it is also paramount to link clearly what are the school taught skills that is applicable to everyone and which side hustles does it apply to specifically so that students using the platform are clear. One way is also maybe to onboard companies and small businesses onto the platform so that these youths who are able to improve on their skillsets are able to put them to good use by interning or volunteering with these companies to better enhance their skill set and also expand their portfolio and form better working relations, which is a win win situation for all

More companies can provide a learning experience for students to progress in their company and also guide them eventually to succeed in the role they are looking to work at and give them more exposure to the field they are keen on. There should also be greater clarity on the roles the interns will be doing so the interns can have a good takeaway from their experience of learning with the company. There can also be feedback from the interns on their learning experience with the company if it was useful to their career.
