Problem Statement

Family members can be necessary pillars of support, especially in difficult times. Having a strong network of supportive family and friends helps enhance our mental well-being.

How can we help build and maintain a network of people that youth can trust and fall back on in times of difficulty?

Project Description

Eubiwell aims to bridge the gap for adult figures to learn and upskill their knowledge in lending support to youths. This project aims to empower adult figures to have more open conversations with youths through the WARM framework where W stands for Welcome, A stands for Being Aware, R stands for showing respect, and M stands for I am here. This minimises the likelihood of adult figures to dismiss the concerns of youths by hearing them out without any judgements and showing care and concern towards them.

It depends. But I know well that my parents can never understand my feelings( tried and failed). I just feel like people who have a huge gen GAP have a harder time understanding each other.

I\'m open to the idea but it really depends on the adults\' mindset. It\'s important to be open-minded about these things or to listen to other perspectives. Closed or shut-off minds can be hard to deal with.

In response to "How comfortable and confident are you to talk to your loved ones about their mental wellbeing?"

Depends on who they are and how receptive they have been to my previous sharing. I would probably be more willing and open to share with those who are able to look beyond the stigma associated with mental wellbeing/health.

In response to "How keen would you be to discover further on learning how to support and care for those who are struggling?"

I would be very keen to learn how to support and care for others who are struggling because I believe that in order to break the stigma, we must put ourselves out there to help others and show them that they are not alone. It can also help to quell some myths about mental health challenges (e.g. to demonstrate that a person is NOT crazy) that others may hold.

img placeholder

29/12/21 04:42:29

In response to "How receptive would you be to work alongside adult figures for them to understand the challenges that the younger generation face?"

It depends on the mindset of the adult to begin with. If the adult is someone with a closed mindset who believes that there are only certain ways to address certain challenges, then I would be less keen to work alongside them as it would involve having to address their issues first before the real work an actually begin. This takes time and I personally may not have the capacity or luxury of time in this aspect. However, if the adult is open and genuinely wants to help, I would be happy to work alongside them.

The idea of a human library for mental wellness is interesting and if available on demand could offer a helpful resource to youth with nowhere else to go. How will the proposed \"Empathy and Support Literacy Toolkit\" prepare the identified adult figures to ensure that they are properly equipped with the necessary skills to respond to the challenges of the youth who seek their guidance?

I don\'t really understand what exactly your project is about

img placeholder

In response to "How Can We Improve?"

I really appreciate the focus of this project. Most of the youths I interact with always face problems with adults when it comes to understanding each other, causing them to go into distress. It is literally happening on daily basis. Friends and cousins ranting about how their parents don’t understand them well and to make it all worse, random people giving you advise and all is what’s creating the problem. You guys could also focus on creating awareness about some ideologies that youths might have today that they might not understand. This way they are more empathetic as well.

I appreciate the targeted approach your team has taken, to zoom in on the role of adult figures (for youth). More clarity and precision would sharpen your problem statement; are there particular attitudes or assumptions that you observe in adults that you are trying to intervene to correct? Be careful about coming across as condescending or over-generalizing about differences between generational cohorts.

I would suggest that the videos be uploaded on platforms that are more popular with adults, e.g. Facebook (groups, pages, timelines), Whatsapp. If there are enough funds, you could also engage the media to broadcast your initiative as well as more adults are likely to keep up with local news

In response to "How Can We Improve?"

I like the idea of getting adults involved. However, it is not clear to me how these adults will be selected (i.e. is there a selection/screening process) and to better understand their motivation for wanting to be involved in this initiative. Their demeanour/characteristic/personality are all very important for the programme to work. Having adults as supportive figures can be a very tricky issue. If a youth has a negative experience when opening up to an adult who is part of the programme, it may cause them to shut themselves off to such interactions in the future. Would be good to have a detailed plan on how these adults will be selected and have clearly defined roles for them.

In response to "How Can We Improve?"

I think that more parenting classes or sharing among adults can help improve the relationship with parents and children. Sometimes what adults want for the child may not be what the child wants and how to achieve a consensus without being over domineering or not emphatically towards the other party is important. Can have a framework that shares on communicating.

In response to "How Can We Improve?"

I agree that family and friends are a critical pillar of support when one faces challenges in life. Perhaps one thing that the team can explore is to create short form videos that appeal to the adult generation that uses facebook and whatsapp! these videos could raise awareness and teach skills to be mental health supporters. I am not sure if working with adults to train them as mental health supporters might be the best way to do it. Most youths would prefer to share their issues with close friends in their age group!! perhaps this training could also be extended to the youth peer, mental health supporters too! :)
