Instead of smoothies only, it could be in daily meals such as salads at cold storage. After chopping up the vegetables, it’s not obvious to the eye whether or not the vegetable was “ugly” to begin with.

Definetely because people in general still judge based on looks, it is apparent in marketing throughout the 21st century and thus one can never escape from beauty standards even on products. Some prefer functionality but in an affluent society, the usage of such products will definetely change when it comes to educating the public that beauty can be made from what seemed 'imperfect' in their eyes. Just try to avoid using negative connotations when it comes to marketing the fruits and vegetables, or the smoothies.

When such products are put together in a cluster, it is akin to picking which person you want on your team during sports class. In a basket of 'good' looking ones, obviously differences from shape, color, smell and size will come into play even to a cluster of 'bad' looking ones. There is a standard to these perceptions even if it is subjective, hence, the mystery and potential lies in what these 'bad' products can be turn into.

As a visual person, colour appeals to me when it comes to making choices before looking out for imperfections like bruises and cuts, next, I would turn to my olfactory senses because it is the next thing that tells my subconscious if the product is ripe for consumption or long past its due date and lastly when it comes to auditory senses, it could be from word-of-mouth or reviews about said product.

I definitely understand why people would pick a better looking fruit and vegetable. You’re basically paying the same price for something pretty and perfect compared to one that looks like it’s been rolling around for sometime. I think it would be a great initiative to work with hawkers or other food vendors because I’m sure the “ugliness” of the item doesn’t affect its taste. Unless it’s a partially rotting and extremely bruised fruit, but I still feel like there would be use for them, perhaps making essential oils or fertiliser - something that is not ingested.

I do understand that people will be prone to picking fruits and vegetables that looks perfect, instead of those that has small bruises, off-coloured.. the common practice of purchasing from supermarkets or wet markets would be to "touch and feel" (or press) the fruits (veg) to ensure freshness and suitability.
Are we able to explore other possible whereby these perishable food are wasted too? (not just in the markets) Marketing photoshoots? Mass selling of oranges during CNY? Cooking show? Bought fruits but forgot about it - store it till it turns bad etc
Generic effort that we can play a part in the society would be:
1. advice on the best eaten date of perishable food / eg buy only what you can finish within the next 3 days
2. limit the amount that we're displaying (for supermarket) so that we may get a chance to limit the amount of fruits/veg being "bruised" by customers
3. Ugly food (that can still be eaten) can be sold at a discounted rate - i believe there will still be people who doesn't mind the appearance
4. besides juices (or smoothies), we can make purees too!
5. sell? or give the ugly food to fruit stalls (smoothie/yoghurt/acai stalls) so that they can turn them into juices/fruit toppings
6. Smaller food bundle (and cheaper price) if possible - less wastage eg smaller punnet of grape, smaller sale bundle of 3 for $2 rather than 5 for $3
7. Reference from Misfit Markets/Ugly Food SG/Imperfect Foods

The question is—how many people make smoothies at home? Usually, one would be eating fruit as is (e.g. biting into an apple) and cooking vegetables as is at home, they wouldn't be drinking some colourful liquid that seems to look and taste fine. I think some cooking demonstration might help on the vegetable front, while for fruit, depending on the definition of "ugly" there'd need to be non-smoothie use cases as well

Hmm not really actually, as consumers nowadays are visual consumers as the stigma is way too ingrained and entrenched in our society especially, we tend to go for something value for money, in this case, bigger is better and looking nicer is advantageous (in the case of food)

It’s a good idea! To change the perception by letting consumers know that uglier food can still be eaten and taste the same! However, there is still a problem where people will still go for good looking food as the price is the same. So there has to be an incentive for consumers to want to select uglier food. Such as, working with the supermarket to have a section for the uglier food and to sell them at a cheaper price. Another way is to partner with F&B businesses that would purchase these uglier food and have them to promote it to their customers that’s uglier food tastes the same!

I’ve heard of restaurants and food companies that make meals or food products out of ugly fruit/veg e.g. Food Bank x Plentyfull, Eat Me Chutneys. I think something like that (i.e. a cooking demonstration) would be more effective because I don’t think people drink fruit/veg smoothies all that often?? We’re more of a bubble tea crowd here in Singapore…

i believe that it will improve to a small extent as generally the public may not always consume smoothies and the idea of hiding what may seem spoilt into a drink. may even push consumers away. Through education, i think they will only be a small increment in purchase. On top of that, in the event the demand for it is not high, the shelf life of the produce may not last to fit the demand.

May and/or may not. I would much like to believe that the smoothies stall would have selected the non-ugly parts and thrown away the non-edible part of the fruits and vegetables prior to making them into smoothies. This would make the smoothies be safe for consumption. However, if I am to purchase the ugly fruit and vegetables on my own, the stake would be higher. Would think that if the fruits and vegetables stall owners are honest and able to help select/classify/cut off the ugly parts and provide with price differentiator between the 'beautiful' and 'ugly or defected' fruits, i would be much more willing to purchase the defected fruits&vegetables

This solution could be backed up by posters and advertisements to publicise that ugly fruits are as safe as fresh looking ones. Coz, when we think of ugly fruits, we immediately think of it being rotten, bacteria infested and what not. Also you could also educate them on the shelf-life of ugly looking fruits , so that they could buy it accordingly

Yes, the worry stems from buying a spoilt product that you wouldn’t be able to consume at home or if the product spoils sooner than expected. Ordering a smoothie on the spot does negate the worries of buying or consuming a product that is spoilt or about the spoil. Since smoothies are all about the insides of the fruits, using ugly fruits is not an issue. Love the idea!

If given a choice between ugly and aesthetic produce at the same price points, of course I would continue for both freshness and aesthetic rather than just freshness. But ugly produce can be allocated to a section where it's priced slightly cheaper and I would be more likely to purchase it.

In response to "If you buy and consumed smoothies made from ugly fruit and vegetables, would your perception of the usage of ugly fruit and vegetables be changed?"
I don't think so, because if I don't know that it was made from "ugly" fruit and vegetables, it doesn't really matter to me. I feel that many people's perception of "ugly" fruit and vegetables is that the inside would be damaged too and it would be a waste of money. Thats why people choose not to buy them. Hope this helps!

Not really, as I have the impression that the “spoilt” parts are just blended in with parts that are alright, which makes me more skeptical about the quality of my smoothie and if it is safe to consume.

I think consumers can be further persuaded if there are volunteers to get a taste of the smoothies afterward to prove that it is safe to consume ugly fruits or vegetables because I might not get persuaded too if it's just simply blending it without anyone to taste it :)

It may be helpful to consider whether the fact that the smoothies were made from ugly fruits and vegetables could be revealed after the taster!! That provides greater shock value. Also, hand out smoothie recipe cards on recycled paper?

I would think it's even better than other smoothies because vendors outside may use rotting fruits/vegetables as a cost-cutting measure, so knowing I am consuming smoothies made from fresh fruits/vegetables is in fact more reassuring and also makes me feel good that I would be able to contribute to food waste reduction.

I think as long as they are fresh, there is no reason that they should be thrown away since they are still safe to consume and will taste delicious too :)

I think smoothies are a great first starting step to introduce to people the concept of Ugly food. However, the act of cosmetic filtering is quite engrained here in Singapore and ultimately, the best situation is outside of smoothies, people are mindful of their produce consumption behaviour. Smoothies might not appeal to the older generation due to differences in taste and preferences and is unfortunate as cosmetic filtering occurs most in grocery shops and its mostly the older generation who frequents there more often. However, I believe that this smoothie idea can serve as a good introduction to the idea for youths. bPossibly cn explore working with local media companies like smart local or mothership?

In my opinion as Chef in trainee/going to be chef , as a chef , you would want your customers to feel good in your restaurant and colors and the presentation will appeal to customers like we must know what the young like to eat or dietary/allergy , can we give someone nuts when have allergy ?

When purchasing smoothies, it is unlikely that consumers would check to see the appearance of fruits and vegetables that are used to make the juice. For example, when you purchase fruit juice from hawker centers, it is unlikely that you would check the appearance of the fruits that are used to make the drinks. Not to say that you shouldn't let consumers know or hide that “ugly” fruits are being used. But instead find a way to show case to consumers that the drinks are still as tasty – whether they are being made from “ugly” fruits or “not ugly” fruits. Perhaps, one way to gain traction is to have a video about individuals doing a blind taste test between drinks that have been made from “ugly” fruits vs “non ugly” fruits and to see whether they are able to differentiate both cups. This could perhaps help with the mindset change that you are striving to achieve.

My current perception is that although they might taste the same as fruit and vegetables which are not considered “ugly”, when presented with an “ugly” fruit and a “not ugly” fruit, I believe most people would choose to purchase the “not ugly” fruit instead. Hence, it is likely that “ugly” fruits and vegetables are often left behind.

In picking fruits, would usually check to see if there are any holes in the fruits (which might indicate pests). Or in vegetables, would generally check to see if the vegetable is fresh or rotten.

Other incentives to get them to buy ugly food could be lowering prices of these foods? This could b by having a separate stand in the supermarkets just for ugly foods, so people could pick out their fruits and vegetables there. and mayb by purchasing those not so pretty fruits/ vegetables, they are given 'freebies' like your smoothies, and maybe more things?

I am not too sure how would a smoothie stand alone alter their mindset. Ofc got free drinks, people will come and take. But then, what's next? Logically speaking, if there is good looking fruits and vegetables put side to side with ugly ones - most normal human beings would pick the good-looking ones right? I think in order to really incentivise consumers to purchase ugly food, there needs to be other kinds of incentives.
A fruit juice store using unwanted ugly fruits and veggies - that being said, idk if my current go to fruit juice stores uses ugly fruits? But it doesn't matter from a consumer perspective. It's value for money and the looks does not matter. However, the team might want to do more research upstream in terms of how suppliers selects and distributes their fruits. I suspect discarding of fruits and veggies are more upstream. Where suppliers it maybe even farmers does a selection first before even going to the the supermarkets.
agree with lowering the price. if nice looking and ugly fruits have the same price, most people would rather spend the same money and get "better" quality food.

Another way to encourage people to purchase "ugly" fruits may be to price the "ugly" fruits at a lower price, as most people would probably prefer to buy fruits that has a nicer appearance than "ugly" fruits since they are paying the same price.

letting them try smoothies does help to raise awareness of ugly fruits and veges but awareness alone is not enough to create long-term behaviour change. This is because people may feel that they are entitled to a pretty/best-looking fruit when they are paying for it with their hard-earned money. The team could consider exploring other aspects of the food value chain where there may be more food waste and loss. e.g. filtering at farms or filtering by the supermarkets... consumer end may only be a small part of the larger problem.

If the approach you've chosen is education, it makes more sense to speak to the problem directly, rather than addressing it obliquely by demonstrating how ugly fruits/ vegetables are equally tasty. Supermarkets already conduct some form of screening to ensure that the food they put out are of sufficient quality, as do other links in the supply chain. It'd be more expeditious, more hard-hitting to explain simply why 'ugliness' is not a measure of edibility, taste, and food safety, and that 'ugly food' is not just qualitatively similar to its 'prettier' counterpart, its 'ugliness' is also natural and to be expected.
In addition, for your consideration: https://www.vox.com/the-goods/2019/2/26/18240399/food-waste-ugly-produce-myths-farms
Maybe a booth game (guess which smoothie is made from ugly vs beautiful fruits and vegetables) would be a fun and impactful way to communicate that both taste equally good.
