I wish that more employers would ask questions pertaining to my soft skills than asking what university I came from. This means that I hope that SOMEONE can reach out to society (especially major MNCs), to raise awareness of the importance of soft skills. Otherwise, people who just don't do well in school, but have so much to offer, will really lose out!

I have a mentor (my boss) who believes in soft skills, and not so much of academic skills. She teaches me about communication, handling difficult clients, being calm, having a clear state of mind, and so much more. She 's my main source of soft-skill honing. But I also read a lot -- whether its self-help books, or TV, etc. Another thing I do (actually not really by choice, but it helps) I put myself out of my comfort zone. The feeling is NOT NICE AT ALL. But I do acknowledge that the learning points are priceless. l

I firmly believe that no matter how much one is exposed to developing their soft skill, it's important to put it to practice. If we could have a framework develop for certain soft skills and having coaches scoring candidates through 1-1 practice then it gives the participants some sort of guidance to improve.

I'm actually developing it quite well as my job requires it being in the business development team. On top of practicing in my day-to-day job, attending courses and workshops, I've also done a lot of reading and attending networking events (virtuals ones too) to practice since there's not really an assessment you can take to acquire soft skills besides putting it to practice. .

Besides using AI, there really needs to be professional human touch of charting progress and accessing training needs.
Guest

Besides tapping on AI, the solution should ideally still consist of elements of human touch, such as having a mentor to guide the students, for ultimately, the soft skills learnt are supposed to help enhance the students interpersonal skills and allow them to interact more effectively and harmoniously with others. If the platform is purely based on AI, the lack of human touch may lead to detrimental effects down the road.

Problem: While tapping on AI to help students effectively measure and track personal growth in soft skills over experiences, certain workplaces and environment adopt different soft skills and thus it is not feasible for an AI to learn every single workplace culture for one's soft skill to apply as it isn't a one-route journey but akin to an assortment of chocolates.
Solution: The AI should aim to help students achieve the rudimentary via questioning the student through a series of the student's awareness and observations because that is the key element to developing soft skills. Hence, only when the AI have a much better idea of what the environment is like, then would it able to tailor-suit a program that can help the student in refining their soft skills. Also you have double is on your description at ' there is is no platform or method to measure and track our growth in soft skills'.

Reading books about soft skills is a good step but never enough. Theory can only get you so far but it is practice in real life situations where soft skills are actually developed and formed.

Having opportunities to develop these soft skills and some guidance on how it can be done. If I'm not comfortable with public speaking, what other options do I have?

Although I do not deliberately participate in any courses to develop soft skills, I do frequently check with others, such as my seniors in the workplace when I'm unsure about the best course of action or how best to react to a certain situation. I feel that feedback from close friends who are unafraid to share their true opinion also helps.

Growth is not a straight line, progress is not always linear. I personally feel that having a mentor who is able to observe you continuously in different settings is currently the best way to evaluate one’s soft skills and areas to work on. However, we do not always have a mentor who is able or willing to take the time to monitor your progress and we might not feel that their comments are accurate. I have the following suggestions: 1)Allow personalisation for goal based soft skills. 2) Make a portion of the profiles private, to prevent unnecessary comparisons from arising. People tend to compare statistics, and this stunts the growth of others who might not feel as competent or are in the process of developing a certain skill. 3) Provide recommendations on possible situations that may aid in soft skills development (e.g. part-time job as a tutor in order to learn how to communicate with a different age group, volunteer to be speaker for your group presentation to train public speaking skills). 4) Try to speak to professionals in different fields to find out what soft skills are required for different career paths. It would be good for goal-setting and finding a job that better suit oneself. 5) I believe that a forum might be useful. Whereby allowing an external party to review or provide comments (similar to how on LinkedIn allows fellow employees to leave remarks about each other), for example a particular situation at school and how to resolve it, might help provide constructive criticisms and recommendations. However, this would require consistent monitoring and requires reader discretion. 6) For people who are under 18, I believe that there needs to be more guidance involved. Even at a later age, some individuals are unable to properly accept and process feedback. Rather than leaving it to themselves to figure things out, I believe that it might be helpful to help youth focus more on how to improve, rather than their own flaws. At the end of the day, I hope that Skilio will be a platform that helps people fulfil their resolutions and refocus in life, and not a platform for people to focus on measuring themselves especially in comparison with others.

In response to "How are you developing your soft skills?"
Through constantly putting myself in situations that challenge me. To be more specific, an example is to be seeking out internships that provide me with different experiences, with focus on different soft skills. A marketing internship would require me to be able to communicate the same key ideas to different audiences with varied levels of understanding about the concept. A research-based internship would require me to be able to work well with others in a group setting and coordinating discussions. In terms of growth, I believe that different soft skills require different ways to measure progress. For example, if I am more comfortable with public speaking, I notice that there is a positive correlation with how others perceive my presentation as well. I would not say that I am consistently tracking my soft skills, however I am putting in the effort to work on them and ensure that I am better able to excel in any type of situation.

One question I have is do experiences necessarily lead to soft skills development. I think one missing thing in this solution is how it helps someone who has tracked their progress improve apart from mere experiencing. Some people can go through experiences and either reflect but learn nothing or reflect and learn the same thing. Does this truly mean progress?
Further, I sense that the feedback received will likely be positive as people avoid leaving negative feedback in black and white. Also, in practising their own soft skills, they will avoid saying the whole truth if it involves pointing out somebody's weaknesses, especially if the person is a peer.
Think there needs to be a multidimensional solution: allow people to take courses/ speak to a mentor, followed by a reflection one the takeaway from such session that they would attempt to apply in their next experience, and then an opportunity for them to apply their takeaway, followed by reflection and feedback from higher ups (in addition to peers) who have more incentive and authority to dish out suggestions for improvement to evaluate whether the takeaway has been sufficiently put to practice.

As a university student graduating this coming May, I believe that soft skills are key in ensuring progression in the workplace. When we think about soft skills, definitely communication skills and ways of presenting oneself are the skill sets that come to mind. At my previous internship, we had a seminar on the importance of workplace connections. Initially, I thought it was a taboo topic to be discussed openly about, but the speakers handled the topic maturely and talked about how we can pursue growth in our careers through networking and seeking new opportunities. From my own experience as an intern, I found that the workplace requires you to be tactful, be it in terms of the way you craft an email to credit your teammates, to how you handle lunch hour talks. The term “soft skills” has evolved and expanded over the years, and I believe that developing good interpersonal skills helps you to be more comfortable in the workplace and from there you can fulfil your potential to the fullest. Rather than focusing on imitation, strive for authenticity to better allow one to think of soft skills as growth, rather than a chore or a requirement.

I do think that soft skills development and harnessing the power of emotional intelligence (EQ) is the ultimate differentiating factor in this increasingly educated and competitive society. The team should consider the approach and effectiveness of such a platform and to explore how to better provide experiential learning to cultivate such skills.

I absolutely love this idea! As someone who is very growth-driven, I have to admit that I've never taught about this idea about tracking my progress. All progress is just based on my own results and the own thoughts on my head. Just like how we study for exams, we need a good gauge on how we are performing and improving. One matter to consider: How can you possibly monetize this idea? At the end of the day, investors are looking for a good idea that can be eventually monetized. Is there a demand for this, and are people willing to pay for it? Something to consider :)

I think a good idea to consider in developing a metric for soft skills would be to make it flexible enough such that it can be incorporated with or aligned to the specific performance metrics in different companies. Soft skills as part of performance review is becoming increasingly popular, so aligning with company goals and visions would be increasingly important to different individuals

I feel it is important for the open and constructive conversations and feedback in the workplace without managers and employees being overly critical about such feedback. And to do that, it starts with having a healthy, positive culture at work. It's not easy to cultivate a proper culture but always important for leaders above to set the correct and proper example for such a culture to exist.

I don't think that having some kind of measurement would be that useful. Can you really measure soft skills that discretely? What is the measurement based on? What if I’m crazy amazing at talking to customers at work but clam up when it comes to talking to people in social settings? What if I’m super organised at work but my personal life is a mess? How will you measure that?
Meanwhile, it would be great to have some record of the things that you’ve done to improve your soft skills, as they might be useful to include in a resume.

A question that comes to mind is how would you measure soft skills in a quantifiable way, using measures that are valid and reliable? If the measures of soft skills are not valid nor reliable, then tracking this data would not be meaningful. Looking at how organisational psychology measures and develops soft skills would be useful!

I think there needs to be work to help people understand the importance of soft skills to compliment the work that you do.

Actually Im not sure if you know but many universities are already creating this platform for their students called an enhanced transcript system. It does seem to be more organic for universities to onboard these programs.

In response to "What would you wish to have to support your soft skills development journey?"
1.Feedback from others: sometimes we may not be the best judge to determine our own progress so getting honest feedback from others would be very helpful. However in real life, people tend not to be so comfortable with giving feedback, so getting timely and honest feedback is hard. 2.Support group/community: having a support group or like-minded people who want to work on the same soft skills would be very helpful to keep us on track and getting motivation when we feel like giving up.

In response to "How are you developing your soft skills?"
1. Goal setting: set SMART goals to focus on top soft skills that I would like to work on. Having a goal ensures I can be more focused and milestones to keep me on track 2.Introspection: constantly self-reflect on the progress that I have made, what's being done right/wrong and how can I improve. This will help me to reformulate my plan towards improving my soft skills 3.Learn from others: leverage on the wisdom of the crowd by getting advice from different people such as your peers, parents, colleagues/managers at work. they are like my board of advisors who can give good tips and offer new perspective 4. Learn from a role model: it helps a lot to find a role model so you can feel motivated and also learn from their experience.

Soft Skills like i mentioned is important and I think company should trained not matter the age and not matter PWD/SN challenge and company should not use favorism to train and if the office have nothing, they should send to MOM or MCCY that there is no work and For Speech, employers and colleagues should hire a specialist/PWD or SN coach in the workplace in term of communication and speech, eg Mcdonald have MC chairty or MChouse for underprivellege if you check website and KFC support ASPN and several church support charity under VWOs .

8 but I still some company is not equipped to help less disadvantage , cannot under PWD language or speech talking , i would give 3/10 on soft skill based on the company , some company is still not helping PWDs in term on upgrading and let PWDs to idle in the office without work , in my opinion soft skills is very important and i would give 10 but i give 8 because there is work to be done . SGE have trainned several PWD in their respective fields and some have their certificate certify in F&B and many more .
