As a tuition teacher for 5 years, I always hope to be able to give free tuition to low income primary school students around my community! Other than that, I am happy to help with ad-hoc stuff like printing, grocery runs for the elderly, and definitely pet-sitting!

Hello! I believe resources that can be provided include physical materials - such as printing services (esp in my area, Serangoon where there's really no affordable printing shop!), food, home-based businesses around the area (there are so many of those without us knowing! Can save on delivery fees too) Other than that, I believe neighbours in the community can also lend their services for one another: for example, pet sitting services, tuition, food delivery (some communities do have groups where they bulk-buy lunch for large groups within the neighbourhood as well!) As a consultant in my day job, I would personally hope to support small businesses and social enterprises within my neighbourhood, and watch them grow into something bigger! :)

It really depends on what you consider as resource? Service where I can help an individual so solve a problem or a product where I could provide?

Problem: Sharing of resources more accessible for all parties are succeptible to trust and credibility.
Solution: No one would step into a Grab until they experienced it first-hand and participate in a rating and review system like Carousell. There is a need to give out incentives for others to try being a partner on the platform and there is also a similar rating and review system to be implemented on the platform. Furthermore, there must be rules that adhere to the categorization of services one can provide in order to follow safety and security rules while perishables must not be returned as its own but by favour so trading favours can work out as a way to boost one's rating too as a currency on this platform.

Awareness of such a platform, adopting it depends a lot on trust eg someone loan an equipment will return it in good order or the lender provide a good, working equipment etc.

I would say this idea, while thoughtful, may not be accessible by the vulnerable communities it hopes to target. For example, my grandmother is illiterate and does not have a mobile phone at all (let alone a smart phone). Many others from her generation are similar, and would not even be able to read the scratchbac poster I've seen posted in my neighbourhood.
However, I can see this benefiting other members of the community and acting as a way to bring neighbours closer together through the sharing of resources etc.

I think that in general, the idea for the proposed solution has its merits - maximizing usage, reducing (possible) ways, helping the vulnerable/disadvantage as we all should. A thing to consider is the ACCESS to such a platform. More often than not, the ones who needs such services/help do not have the access to it (case in point: when safe check-in happened at the start, how many elderlies (especially) or low income individuals are forced to stay on the sidelines/be severely inconvenienced etc just because they do not have a smartphone to scan a QR code or how disconnected they are in obtaining accurate information fast/cash subsidies from govt just because they don't have ibanking/smartphones etc). Without a proper medium, the scheme won't reach to those who needs it the most. Perhaps an avenue to consider is installing a phone/laptop device in community centers (supervised by the cc's employees if need be) that allows such residents to have said access that allows them to connect to people that can offer the resources they need.

I would be worried about the safety and security that comes with this sharing model -- how do I ensure that something borrowed will be returned and that there is accountability? Though it is a good idea to bring some sense of community, I am wondering how this project can incentivise people to treat it as a way to connect rather than just something transactional (eg. falling into the trap of GrabHitch rides where people opt for it just as a cheaper alternative and nothing more). Perhaps there could be a profile page where people are able to list their interests to spark some conversation or meet like-minded individuals. This would also give an opportunity for verification of identity to ensure a greater sense of safety.

Will users be able to see/search for listings that aren’t necessarily near to their location? Say I’m looking for a trolley to help me move stuff, and someone happens to have one but is just slightly out of my location radius, but I have a car and can easily get to them. It’d be a missed opportunity if we don’t get connected…

I love the idea of maximising resources and connecting people by having a sharing platform - this simultaneously achieves both social and environmental impact - social mixing and building social capital as well as reducing material use/waste and the associated carbon emissions.
I follow yall on telegram!! :))
Here are some additional thoughts:
Is the app going to be solely focused on sharing physical objects like a bicycle pump? Or possibly giving items/donation-in-kind and volunteering one’s time and skills? There are platforms like https://www.goodhoodsg.com/, https://www.outsideapp.co/, and https://www.sgassist.com/ that are tech-based innovation looking at connecting people at the location-specific/hyperlocal level. There are also groups like friendzone which aims to connect people at the neighbourhood level and kampung kakis which work with the rental block/less privileged communities. It might be useful to explore collaborations to increase your user base and also offer other services/functionalities. If the long term goal is to become a business, it might also make sense to clearly define your USP versus said ‘competitors’.
A potential issue i find is that users of the app might find it too spammy and too much of a hassle to run through all the notifications to see if one can help with any request. There could be a filter function of sorts for requests one may be to help! Or any other way to make it less overwhelming - so people won't ignore it.
There might be code issues/functionalities that yall have to add along the way. Running to the ground with a MVP and talking to users to understand the user journey and also, getting more active members to meet up with your team and provide user feedback for further prototyping would be strongly recommended (and also maybe collect media human interest stories for your website/app e.g. xiaoming and ali became bffs 5eva and joined the NBA together and it all started with the sharing a basketball pump via #scatchbac).

Joseph Tay (josephtay090491@gmail.com) - reposting as I posted anonymously previously, apologies!
Hey Scratchbac, glad you are tackling resource waste AND community (dis)connectedness at the same time. I'm sure your team has thought about this way longer than I have, but i'd like to offer my two cents still.
1) A potential UX challenge could be the "noise" that anyone looking for resources would have to work through. I'm assuming that your current app is pitched rather broadly, with resources of all shapes and forms being considered for sharing. Barring a really robust and developed matching algorithm, focusing on resource categorisation will probably sharpen the effectiveness of resource matching. With that said, categorisation is a lot harder than it sounds! I wish you all the best in calibrating for the wide slew of resource-type that will roll in as your user base scales.
2) A potential functionality opportunity could be connecting your users to relevant non-profit services. I noticed that some of the comments below offered services like tutoring and mentoring. Perhaps it would be meaningful to allow ground-up social service providers to be connected to such individuals, so that resource duplication can be avoided, and existing programs/support systems can be maximised.
3) Finally, i'm also aware that there are organisations like GoodHood that hope to provide a similar service. Just wondering if you are in partnership with them, or if you see any modes of meaningful collaboration down the road. All the best!

So firstly I could ask this question: Why would someone get involved in this at the very first place. We might be aware that we have incentive too but it might not be realised by a lot of them as it seems like an huge commitment for people who might have a busy life. So you could do something to give them an idea that this initiative is easy and non- time constraining. You could help them realise the benefit they reap from involving in this cause as well. At the end of the day, it really comes down to changing the mindset
