B2B could include HBB since they buy smaller quantity will be flexible enough to handle specifications returns/rejects eg too small size chickens or too lean belly pork etc. Would be more effective to include B2C to allow consumers to buy up odd lots.

The team could consider more user friendly features in the app and possibly find out which category of restaurants (e.g. fast food, buffet etc) generates the most waste and tackle the more urgent issues first.

Yes. It provides a more seamless way to procure ingredients and the digitalised process could result in lower prices. Moreover, its great that I could do my part to help reduce food waste and divert unused resources to those who need it too.

The concept of the idea sounds fresh and practical. Given that many other processes are getting digitalised, the use of an app to balance demand and supply could prevent over supply and wastages to occur. However, household disposal is another major contributor of food waste which the team could consider look at in expanding the project in future.

There is a similar idea currently by Treatsure app. Except that it is a commercial app that packs excess food from hotel buffets to buyers for around $10. Perhaps Savour can take a look and learn from it.

What is missing now is a co-ordinating excess food agency to manage and divert the required quantity of food to the charity/soup kitchen/ngo for re-distribution to low income.
The NGO/charity/soup kitchen sign up on the platform and list their requirement eg fresh vege, poultry etc and when there are surplus meeting some or all required, it is diverted there. This will eliminate giving the "wrong" food type which will not be used eg beef to a temple soup kitchen. It also more efficiently provide the required quantity and the excess can go to another beneficially instead of 1 getting a ton of garlic and no onions whilst another all onions only.
Also checks on food quality and expiration can be done before diverting, ring-fence the re-distribution so only registered beneficiaries can have access and not become free for all and resulting in donations being re-sold instead of personal consumption.

I’d be interested to know what the current “manual procurement process” is and why a digital solution would be beneficial. Are F&B outlets already donating their extra food to charity? If so, what are the current inefficiencies in the process? Why is there mention of “corporate customers”—does this refer to charities or extend to corporations and businesses? Why is it an “e-commerce platform”, do charities have to pay for this extra food? Since it’s B2B, is the platform actually open to consumers (which is the impression I’m getting from other comments)? I’m a little confused as to how your operations would work. Overall, I would recommend being clear on the actual problem that you’re solving and ensuring that your solution has a net positive impact overall (e.g. you may tackle the food collection process but what if the distribution to the end beneficiary is still inefficient and there’s some slippage and wastage going on?)

In addition to the aforementioned suggestion, I have two further points of feedback.
Firstly, to avoid the potential unfortunate scenario in which a second round of food wastage occurs due to incompatibility between recipients' basic food needs (e.g., allergies) and the food resources reallocated to them, there should be extensive demographic analysis of these low-income households. I do not agree with the trite saying "beggars can't be choosers", because it is unavoidable that certain food habits have to be taken into consideration. For example, elderlies living in these low income households are unlikely to be accustomed to Western style diets, and thus the likelihood of them eating a reallocated box of Macaroni & Cheese meal is low, for instance. In contrast, had this item been reallocated to a younger low-income family, it would have better benefited them.
Secondly, given that there are multiple food drive programmes in Singapore, it is perhaps critical to consider how Savour! could cooperate with these pre-existing programmes, to achieve the most effective approach for food redistribution. This is to avoid a situation in which a particular low-income household engages with multiple food drive programmes, which could ultimately exacerbate the food wastage problem by accumulating much more food than they can consume.

May need to consider if the food can/will be appropriately utilised by the beneficiaries (e.g. for unsold bread, giving too much to beneficiaries may still result in wastage due to its shorter shelf life; alternatively, bread may not be suitable for all beneficiaries, e.g. if they are diabetic)

I feel there is a need to address the question on quality vs safety. Some F&B outlets discard their food not because they are keen to waste, but rather they are worried about food poisoning that may occur out of their premises. The accountability is a problem and the risk of contamination is something to work on too.

You would need to provide companies with the means to transport the food to the families that need them. This can most probably be done through volunteers who can collect the food at set times and immediately distribute the foods to the said households. There should also be a way to identify such households which can also be done by working together with social organizations that help the lower income families. As long as companies need not spend much resources on the distribution of the blemished food, I would think that most F&B companies would participate to pull up their image.

This is a great first step to solving the food insecurity problem among the lower-income families. However, important things to take note of would be to take note of the expiry dates of such foods as fresh fruits that are normally thrown due to blemishes will spoil quickly if not stored properly.

Linking the two or more parties together digitally is great as it is convenient and easy, however it would be good if there is an option to include a transport system or collection process. As mentioned above, some establishments choose to throw their leftovers rather than donate them as it is logistically easier and cheaper for them. With solely just the app or digital platform, the process might not be successful due to those additional factors.

Yes, it is a win-win situation where the f&b establishment does not need to worry about disposing of their extra food waste, and providing good edible food to people who really need them. Some f&b places choose to throw their extra food away as it is easier and cheaper logistically, which is very wasteful and somewhat inhumane. This is a great initiative!

The idea of directing extra food to the lower income families is great. Perfectly edible food should never go to waste just because they are not being sold or have blemishes. Donating the surplus is always better than disposing them.

I'm not sure if this point/ factor has already been considered - segmentation of target audience i.e. low-income families [in which case, they would get it free]; families looking for a good deal (which in this case, they can pay for the item that is going to be expired but not yet, and families would still need the items anyway) [I would definitely keep my eyes peeled to see if there are good deals].
Also, I would assume that the products are not perishables to the extent that they are expired within a day (i.e. bread etc.).
So, the time before expiration has to be considered for logistics, health and demand reasons.

This is a very good initiative! Sometimes families are prone to over-ordering and end up having to bring leftovers home or to just leave it as food waste. Organisers for company activities and buffets can also be a point for contact.

When dealing with this food surplus, I suppose it is about both the cooked and uncooked food. With the cooked food going left uneaten, a probable reason might be that the food was not nice. This might mean that those in the lower incomes might also not like the food. Furthermore, they might not too welcome to consume half-consumed food left over by others. These problems might make this idea not work out as intended. Hence, I believe a crucial step is to ensure that the food is of general acceptable eating standard and is packaged in ways that are welcome by the beneficiaries. Secondly, about the uncooked food which I believe is what is the main type of food concerned in this idea, I believe that not only is distribution of food important, but who to distribute to. As seen from this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLVSKx8Wl70&ab_channel=CNAInsider), some people get much more food than they need, while from the data given in the problem statement, there are still some without food. Hence, I believe it is important to gather information to find out who requires the food the most. Lastly, I think in order to fully achieve the aim of cutting food waste, the group not only has to redistribute the food to others, but also tackle the crux of the problem, which is poor planning from the F&B merchants themselves. Perhaps some collaboration with the merchants themselves can help you understand their situations better, and find ways to prevent excessive ordering of food in the future.

I think an area that you might want to think about is how can you get businesses on board your platform. This is as this seems to be an additional mobile application that they would have to download and learn how to use. Furthermore, it might potentially add on tasks to their workload. Hence, it would be great to think about how you might possibly allow for the use of the application to be as seamless and intuitive to use as possible! Food security is more prevalent than many think and I am glad that you have decided to embark on a journey to help to tackle food insecurity in Singapore. Furthermore, I think it would be great to note what you consider as food insecurity in Singapore. Is it the lack of ability to purchase food? Or possibly being unable to have access to healthy food options? Reading your project description, I like the idea of digitising the process and making the process more efficient.

I like the idea of a one-stop B2B e-commerce platform and mobile app!! This will help to reduce food waste only if businesses come on board. Policy shifts such as a good samaritan law might be required to encourage more businesses to give food to charities as fear that they might be liable for food donated is a commonly cited reason for not giving.
