Hygiene! I think that overcoming the mindset of having something that is used is something that needs to be solved. I think us Asians who like to take things from the back even at supermarkets shows how important something being "new" is to us and i think that is a big concern

I might be afraid of the source -- for example if it was dirty. Or maybe it has cat/dog pee or fur on it and I'd be allergic. This really isn't a joke! but in general I'm all for this! Packaging is of no use to me after I receive my items, and they are often as good as new. I try to keep as much as I can "for future use". But there really aren't many opportunities for me to use them, and they clutter up my space so much. If only there is an easy way to donate my used packaging!

In response to "What would be your main concerns if a business were to adopt second-hand packaging?"
Consistency in the packaging as it would be difficult to collect, process and distribute second-hand packaging while making it affordable for business. The business is solving a great problem but it's important to remember businesses are at the mercy of consumers as well. Additionally, it would be great to understand what Package Pals meant by sustainability? An affordable business practice to adopt or sustainable as a resource to reduce reliance on plastics since there are biodegradable materials already which I personally would use and in-fact willing to pay more for.

(Not really feedback but a letter of encouragement. Hope you girls really see it.)
Oh my goodness I love your idea. I have recently gone on a crystal-buying spree. Crystals are very fragile, so crystal sellers usually use a LOT of bubble wrap and cushioning material. I get so guilty when I receive the items, even though I am very thankful that my dear crystals got to me safely.
I have made friends with some crystal sellers over the months, and they also feel guilty about it. Many of them reuse their packaging (for example they wash the bubble wrap they get from their crystal suppliers). Some even use old boxes, and give customers who are old with recycled boxes a discount. I think you are on the PERFECT track.
Sometimes, packaging really cannot be reduced, due to reasons like this. But we can reuse!
How about having some collection points, so that people can get them easily? Some drop-off points would be good too, for people like me. Packaging is of no use to me after I receive my items, and they are often as good as new. I try to keep as much as I can "for future use". But there really aren't many opportunities for me to use them, and they clutter up my space so much. If only there is an easy way to donate my used packaging!
And maybe you can find some easy way to clean the packaging a bit (those that can be cleaned) so that people will be more comfortable with them.

Rather than collect & redistributed the used packagings (as there could be a hygiene concern)
I would suggest the team to teach ppls on how to reuse / recycle the packaging (eg. Teach ppls on how to clean the reusable ziplock bags & reuse it)

Problem: Through the collection of second-hand packaging via donations and redistributes them back to businesses for reuse. The continued efforts of working with businesses and schools on educational campaigns and long-term partnerships to ensure target users come on board actually helps but the issue comes with constant reminders to the businesses such as hotels, restaurants, and supermarkets as the point-of-contact may change time to time.
Solution: There must always be a monthly check and review for a business that sustain itself through their engaged clientel and to constantly work on their repiore with their current base of clientel in order to not risk the arrangement being throw out of the window by new management.

Personally, the packaging I receive a lot (bubble wrap etc) usually feels reused and dusty already. So I am a bit skeptical of purely just collecting and redistributing. There needs to be some sort of quality control therefore I would opt for a renewed or repurposed option. Which is also why I feel that the biodegradable method is better, unless there is a way to keep them “new” and clean!

I have always thrown away my bubble wrap and the plastic used to contain my delivered products ordered from online stores. A way to encourage people to contribute the used wrapping would be to relook at the design of such packaging so that it is able to seal well to deter theft, and also easily reusable such that it is not torn or tattered easily when we open the packages. Having central stations to collect these packaging would also be good.

The main concern appears to be hygiene of the recycled packaging. If there's a cost-effective and energy-effective way to ensure hygiene, there would be no downside to recyling. Depending on the type of packaging, for cosmetic bottles or plastic items, they are washable and can be disinfected before use.
For cupboard packaging/ delivery packaging, one way to ensure that the packaging is as clean as it can be is to allow the delivery man to simply collect the packaging immediately upon delivery, so the customer can remove the product from the packaging and simply keep the product. Some delivery companies are also involved in packing the product, would be good if they can be incentivised to keep the packaging and reuse them.
To earn profits, I think this recycling concept can be used for business as a brand loyalty programme - for e.g. if businesses are willing to give consumers free gift if they collect X amounts of bottles / packaging from their shop, the package pals can help to collect and record how many "points" these consumers get and charge the brands for "advertising". Also consider Resource Sustainability Act, which requires certain businesses to collect packaging under, you may want to target such businesses first since they have to do it any way under the law.

Can check out @thekang.sg he gave plastics another life! I think that we will need efforts from not just the business entities, how are we getting the second hand packaging/ and who to get from, time taken to treat, fix, clean, reassemble/reattach the materials etc.. I vaguely remember that we could recycle angpao with the efforts of one of the prestige banks in SG. It could just be a collaboration between business and recycling companies - this act actually brings light to the business as it will raise awareness to the public that they are stepping up regarding sustainability. The act of reusing materials for brands may be troublesome, but this could open much more collaborations and partnerships of different brands in the future too. Brands that take up this programme may have their "brand name" affected, but if consumer pays for the product, I don't see whats affected (unless you pay for the brand).

To optimize the chances of success and impact, the Package Pals team should have a clear understanding of the costs and benefits that different types of businesses would incur through participating in this project. This could be achieved through doing some market research (e.g. interviewing relevant decision-makers in businesses of diverse sectors in Singapore). In my mind, this is the biggest barrier to scaling up this project -- getting consumers to drop off opened packages seems very doable if the drop-off/ collection process is convenient, but businesses are less likely to make decisions based on public good. The challenge for the team, then, is how to maximize and market the benefits of businesses participating (e.g. how to make it very appealing from a CSR image standpoint), while minimizing costs (e.g. minimize the logistical complexities participation would create).

Hygiene of second hand packaging; State of second hand packaging adopted (whether it is still structurally able to protect the products you have ordered); smell absorbed by packaging (as materials like cardboard are quite porous, it tends to absorb smell. Depending on how many times the packaging gets reused, am concerned that the packaging may start to smell and affect the products packed within)

In my opinion, proper product design for the second hand packaging has to be created as most consumers do not open their packaging nicely. It's usually ripped apart, cut open etc. So in these cases, the packaging will no longer be reusable. For a packaging to be reusable, it will have to be designed properly (no need for sticky tapes, but the design of the box allows you to fold securely)

As I own a small business myself, my main concern with second-hand packaging would be the quality of the packaging, as ones that have been used before would lower the reputation of my brand and premium branding that we are trying to put out. It may also be hard to find packaging that matches the brand aesthetics. As a consumer, I would be concerned about the cleanliness and whether the packaging has bacteria/germs on it, especially because of COVID. And whether the item would be sufficiently protected.

I think another huge problem is on the retailers end as they often package items in boxes/packagings that are way larger than the items, wasting a lot more packaging than required. However, i also understand that it might be difficult to convince these retailers to do their part.

Ensuring collections points are convenient for consumers is going to make a huge diff to the success of the project. Could also look into rebate/vouchers for customers who do terrible packaging (this is impt bc ppl need a purpose to do things). Also, perhaps partnering with schools to get students to collect packaging as part of a CIP programme? (not sure if they do it now but I do remember going door to door collecting newspapers in secondary school)

Get partners on board for educating consumers on circular packaging, and clearly labelling their packages as "recycled packaging" when they mail things out. Give tips on how to best unwrap and preserve packaging they wish to donate. Add more neighbourhood collection points. Make it convenient for people to participate. On the QC side, have processes in place to make sure they only collect clean packaging (things that looks uncontaminated to the eye, no oil stains, crumbs etc.). Find out what type of packaging is most in demand and aim to get consumers to donate that more!

Partner malls, retail shops, HDB mama shops, industrial areas to act as pick up and drop off points & producers/users of the second hand packaging. The ease of collection and distribution will reduce the “laziness” of reusing packaging when it is so available to everyone.

Maybe the companies partnering with Package Pals can indicate on the exterior packaging that they are partnering with Package Pals, and that there could be some incentive (e.g. a small loyalty discount on their next purchase) for the customer to unbox the packaging nicely and neatly (which would in turn make it easier to be repurposed when it is sent in to Package Pals). Thus, benefitting Package Pals through more intact packaging to repurpose, benefitting the customer through cost savings, and benefitting the partnering business with return customers.

A possible suggestion will be to make sure that processes are in place to ensure quality control of the second-hand packaging, and also that participating businesses have stringent checks in place when reusing the packaging. Perhaps consider having businesses pass on savings by giving discounts for products with second-hand packaging, or incentivize consumers with a rewards system.

How would Package Pals ensure that the second-hand packaging is still able to be re-used? As COVID-19 is still present, this may cause further transmission of viruses in the future.

What about poly-mailers? How are going to repurpose packagings that do not have a way to reseallike a box. How will quality be kept? Is there a certain criteria/condition you will then you accept these packagings or will you just make use of every donation you get?

As a consumer, I'll be concerned about whether the packaging is clean and safe for use, since it goes through many hands. Logistically, the drop off points for the packaging has to be accessible, otherwise it can become a deterrence to deposit them.

It would be amazing to expand your business to collecting takeaway containers as well. I'm pretty sure most families have a bunch of it lying around the house that they rarely use. It's very wasteful and maybe by collecting takeaway containers, it can be turned to something more useful for business.

I am thinking about public education regarding the most effective way to open ecommerce packages such that damage to the polymailer is minimised. It is important that things that are repurposed are still in good condition. This is the path of low resistance for the shopper if it is easier for the receiver can open the package easily using the same method. I am also thinking about stricter collection policies to minimise sorting efforts on the operational end.

Businesses would have to ensure that the second-hand packaging would not affect the product that is wrapped inside in any way; be it the cleanliness, texture or quality of the product. In the current pandemic, there may also be fears that the virus may spread through second-hand items, thus there may need to be a time difference to allow the virus to die off first before using the packaging.

Hygiene-- especially during cover-19, it will advisable if the materials undergo a procedure to be sanitised before it reaches the company to be reused.

Re-purposing packaging ensures that there are minimal amount of new packaging manufactured. However, what about the existing ones. How can we reduce that? You guy should think about providing biodegradable packages that then can be re-purposed maybe.

I believe a main concern locals may have is the hygiene levels of such reused packaging. Besides being certified as clean and safe to use, I believe your products may fare well if you work around the marketing and stay away from words like “reused” or “second-hand”. I believe locals, especially the older generations, may infer that such words imply that your products are already used and dirty.

Given that people typically write or print and stick directly on packaging, it might make it hard to reuse, as people may not want to give away their addresses/other personal details especially if it’s not removable. Maybe the solution is to design a way in which addresses can be written and rewritten? Say a water proof / sealed slot for addresses?
We could also set up drop off points at CCs or post offices for people to drop off reusable packaging products, so when they mail stuff, there will be a timely option for people to opt for repurposed packaging!

It would be useful to identify which types of businesses and what types of goods are suitable to adopt second-hand packaging and also what sort of packaging you would like to focus on
A lot of packaging material used today probably still comes directly from the factory where it is still not sustainable for them to adopt second-hand packaging due to quality, shipping or branding concerns, which is why biodegradable and recycled packaging which are more uniform and standard are still relevant.
Another area to focus on would also be the transfer of the collected reusable packaging material; for example do donors tend to bulk donate or would you accept small amounts too, is it feasible to use a drop off and pick up system at various spots or have a permanent location to facilitate transactions.
There are also some businesses who are already sourcing their own second-hand packaging. Should there be a sufficient community, perhaps a marketplace style platform will be relevant for your project in the long run too.
Hope this helps!

I believe that businesses will be concerned about the loss of branding/promotion of other brands. Similarly to the plastic/shopping bags provided when we are at physical stores, many online stores use packaging as a way to market themselves. Be it with their logo prominent displayed or identifying a certain color to be connected with their brand, packaging is part of the customer experience. Therefore, it might be more plausible to focus on collecting the transparent plastic (primary packaging) that often provided by both online and physical stores to enclose the item, instead of the mailing polyester (secondary packaging) that is used by online stores. Furthermore, two systems will have to be put in place in order to ensure quality of the packaging that will be sent out again. The first system is to check what packaging qualifies to be used in another purchase, and how to better recycle the ones who do not make the cut. The second system would have to be in place in order to disinfect the packaging, which seems rather hard to do considering that not only the outside, but the inside should be disinfected as well.

I have the following suggestions as well:
1. Encourage "purchase-pooling", whereby individuals who stay in the same area can make the order together and have it delivered in one packaging to one location. This is often seen in telegram groups whereby people offer to pool orders to hit the minimum shipping requirement. This cuts down on the outer mailing packaging.
2. Encourage consumers to keep the packaging for other uses instead of throwing it away immediately, such as when reselling items on the various platforms. To aid in this, it would be good to provide indented demarcations on packaging so that people do not ruin it when opening.
3. Teach consumers how to fold the packaging into smaller triangles (the way we do with plastic bags) so that they can be returned to Package Pals more conveniently.
4. Similar to how food delivery apps allow you to select if you would like cutlery with your food, I hope that Package Pals can liaise with the various online stores to allow for the option of not having the inner packaging (the transparent plastic one) that does not affect mailing. Even though this would probably require an extra step of "removing" the plastic packaging as many retailers would likely receive the items pre-packaged from suppliers, however I truly hope that this would be a possibility some day.
5. I hope that Package Pals would be come an accredited organisation one day, and the stores who partner with them, can place the accredited logo on their websites to let people know that they are part of this project! All the best!

My main concern would be the wear-and-tear of the second-hand packaging. Hygiene and durability are both major factors to consider in packaging. I would assume that second-hand packaging would either be turned inside out or the first address be covered by the second address. The packaging would be dirty from its first round of travel, turning it inside out and reusing it seems unhygienic. Furthermore, it would have been torn before and stretched out, the packaging may wear thin and be less secure during delivery the second time. Address mix ups may be an issue if marker ink wears off.

I love this project because it deals directly at an issue that is increasing especially since the Covid-19 outbreak with more people shopping online. The only issue is having convenient drop off points for people so they are more willing to make the effort. It would also be great to advise others how to properly recycle or dispose of materials that you don’t collect, like bubble wrap for example. But loving the initiation in general, thank you!

Main concern would be hygiene and whether it would create more carbon emission: 1.hygiene - our parcels usually go through different contact, how to ensure it is clean and sanitised especially given covid is likely sticking around for a long time. 2. indirectly creating more carbon emission: the process of collecting back the packaging, cleaning it and redistributing it may create more carbon footprint and this will defeat the purpose of this project

Good packaging practice that may further prolong the longevity and usability of the packagings? For instance, certain packagings are wrapped up excessively? Too layers or even too much tapes used? which may easier damage the packaging when trying to unwrap. A revamped way of packaging may be key in allow further reusability of packagings.

From a consumer point of view, i wouldn't mind receiving second-hand packaging. But just wondering how many rounds would you allow the packaging to be reused & what products would you allow second hand packaging to be reused for? Eg: perhaps it shouldn't be used for food. Logistically, wondering how you intend to go about collecting these donations and identifying which businesses you would potentially partner with to reuse these packages. Who would be bearing the cost of the reuse/repurposing of the packaging? Would it be your business? Would be be the businesses that you are partnering with? If it is the businesses that you are partnering with, do consider that their existing methods of producing packaging might be cheaper and more efficient than the methods that you are proposing. If so, how could you perhaps convince businesses to adopt your solution! Nonetheless, I think you have identified a pertinent problem and kudos on creating a solution to solve this!

Cleanliness & hygiene issue. How business adopt second hand packaging? Do they have to work with some charity organisation and encourage public to donate parcel box that they not required?

Some of my concerns would include 1)cleanliness and hygiene(due to covid19) of the packaging that is reused by businesses (this is a tough nut to crack), 2)from a business point of view, the cost of logistics to transport the packaging might be higher than the cost of the packaging itself(could possibly explore ways to reduce this cost by using a hub and spoke model and working with neighbours, karang guni and like-minded businesses) , 3) the specifications needed for each product packaging might be different( a system to manage and categorize the different sizes would be helpful if it has not already been done) and 4) the availability of space to store these packaging might be a concern( one business idea might be to pilot the use of origami-style boxes of set sizes(size a/b/c/d/e) where companies can rent the system of boxes for a year at a price. These boxes are of high-quality material maybe a good type of plastic and can be reused infinitely. Can also be folded into a thin piece easily to save space on transport and storage)

Make sure that it cuts cost so businesses would be incentivized to use 2nd hand packaging

Businesses may find it inconvenient and they may prefer to use new packaging to speed up the process of delivery especially if the goods are shipped from overseas.
The notion of collecting used packaging - are we looking for garang guni as collectors and sending it back to package pals? Package pals has their own system set in place to manage this collection process? If garang guni are your collectors, might want to think what's the differentiating of package pals versus other recycling companies.
Also during this COVID period, Im gulity of consuming so much 1 time use plastic but unsure how to go about recycling these packaging, looking forward to using this team's solution for a more sustainable future.

The specifics of how collection would be organised are not clear, but there are already reverse vending machines in the market collecting bottles and cans. The same approach may be adopted in the collection of used packaging.
May be worth thinking about how to collect cardboard box donations as these are bulky and hard for us to transport to the donation venue without a car
Also takes up space to store cardboard boxes at home accumulating it for donation
Wonder whether karangunis can be tapped on for collection, networks, understanding of the ground? Do they collect cardboard boxes as well?

The packaging may not go well with what the business is going for in terms of the branding and aesthetics.

A benchmark should be set as to what is considered to be excellent/good/bad condition for the packaging. It would also be good if there are collection points for people to bring down their packaging to recycle as well, although there would need to be a monitor put in place to prevent exploitation.

Start with a fixed stable pool of donors to collect from to reduce logistical challenges and meet the minimum quantity for business clients. For example, encourage food banks and companies to switch from single-use styrofoam to PE, then recycle that. Obtain quality materials like alcoholic glass bottles from restaurants/bars/households and reuse them for beverage companies.

logistics? how and who will be collecting the secondhand packaging? how would you persuade customers to hold on to packaging (whoch can take up a bit of space) instead of throwing it away? would your organisation sort the secondhand packaging before it reaches the businesses again or would the state of the secondhand packaging depend on the businesses? is there a criteria for cleanliness of packaging from your business? would this be accepted by the masses (especially when there is a widespread contagious disease)? who would be responsible if someone contracts viruses from secondhand packaging?
I'm not sure if this counts as feedback, but it's some food for thought i guess :/
