In response to "If given a choice to use NewFood delivery, would you still prefer to do your own grocery shopping? Why?"
Yes. Some concern I have with online delivery, will be the inability to check on the quality of the grocery before purchasing. Also the amount of packaging that comes with it. If food that are nearing expiry or less than desired can be offered a space in offline stores at also a discounted price, I think it will be very helpful in reducing food wastage and also attractive to some.

Depending on whether it's worth my time to separately shop for items at discounted prices and wait for them to be delivered to me.

I will still shop for my grocery as I notice delivery time slot is becoming increasingly limited and stock availability is not updated in real time. In addition, there is surcharge for certain delivery timing. The disappointment from many “out of stock” items and additional expenses is not worth the convenience of online supermarket purchases. Besides, the close proximity of many 24 hours supermarkets already provides the convenience of shopping at any time of the day.

If supermarkets are the suppliers, I will prefer to do my own shopping for my greens, fruits and frozen food. The unpleasant experience of mishandled pressure/temperature sensitive food during delivery resulted in receiving knock, damage, “bruises” or defrosted items. Food purchases get spoilt fairly quickly and raise the concern of food safety. This is in sharp contrast to the handling (packaging and delivery) process from specialized fruits and vegetables or frozen food suppliers that ensures their fresh produce/frozen items are delivered in good or tip top condition from source to doorsteps of end consumers. On the other hand, our supermarkets’ delivery crew or their third-party delivery companies do not make the same effort. Rather than spending additional time later on in contacting, feedbacking and seeking compensation from supermarkets, I will myself the trouble by shopping at supermarkets to select and bring home these food items.

Not sure how the supermarket discount will help families reduce food wastage. But besides that point it can still be very helpful to have further discounts on groceries, but given that you’re doing delivery+clearance prices, profit margins may be extremely thin. Getting supermarkets onboard with this idea may prove challenging

I am not very clear of how NewFood will operate? Will all food items from all supermarkets be collected by you and offered at on the platform and sold centrally by NewFood? Or will it be that supermarkets list their items and they will organize the delivery by the supermarkets themselves?
I think there are some operational question that needs to be thought through. If it is not centrally organized by NewFood, consumers may not be able to purchase from multiple supermarkets in one checkout. Also with fairprice online for instance, requiring a minimum of $80 for free delivery, will the cost of delivery from multiple supermarkets be less than the cost saved from the discount? Moreover, different supermarkets of the same brand may have different about to discard stocks, so how will the NewFood handle the quantity distribution?

Interesting idea, though I wonder if you'd be able to get the supermarket chains on board. Selling stock at a discount AND need to set up a separate delivery system for these specific NewFood items through a separate NewFood platform? Worthwhile or not? Unless they can easily integrate it into their existing systems and it won't cost them that much, I'm not sure whether supermarkets have enough incentive to get on board. They already have discount schemes in-store and customers who know about the timings would time their trip to take advantage of these markdowns.

Problem: By offering customers discounted prices and delivery services to bring food right to customers' doorsteps, the only novelty to shop at a supermarket are for those who prefer having 'premium and fresh' goods but on the other hand, there will always be a group of vultures ready to swoop in but still complain about it while hoarding certain necessities, making it unavailable for others through 'first-come,first-serve' rules.
Solution: Users would have to be limited to a certain number of purchase per week/month basis to control their purchase and are only able to buy a set amount of food so there would not be a scenario where 'many people choose the unwanted bundle of meat but discard the barrel of unwanted fruits'. In fact, a bidding system can be in-place to control products in high-demand or flash sales for items with low-count.

I believe the concept of selling food close to their expiry dates are already extremely common, with supermarkets doing discounts and sales to clear stocks. Unless the price on the app/website is significantly lower than the discounts in store, I find it less attractive to purchase from the platform since there will be delivery charges along with it, even more so when the consumer is unable to see and choose the ‘better’ food out of the expiring ones. Perhaps the idea of pre-ordering the products would reduce the supermarkets from overstocking and thus wasting food.

What are the quality assurance that would be given to buyers needs to be a factor taken into consideration - for instance if a fresh food produce looks as though it is having a shelf life of 1 day left, and but delivery is sent at midnight where most people won't be cooking, by storing it in the fridge till the next day, the product may not even be able to used by then.

Depends on whether discounts greatly offset any delivery fees, and if supermarkets can be relied on to not deliver subpar groceries (not as in ugly food, but more of whether they would hide mouldy groceries etc that would definitely not have been sold normally)

No, I think NewFood is a great idea to reduce food wastage. However, delivery fees might be a deterrence to others. If the overall cost does not differ much from purchasing quality products in store, people might not be motivated to use the service.

Perhaps we can explore stakeholders beyond supermarkets - even restaurants/ bakeries that are clearing their stocks for the day can be sold at cheaper rate to willing customers :) would like to learn about the exact details of this project, would the app notify users daily at a regular time i.e. 8pm? How efficient and fuss-free would the checkout and delivery process be?

In response to "If given a choice to use NewFood delivery, would you still prefer to do your own grocery shopping? Why?"
I would be incentivised to use NewFood delivery if it's cheaper because most of us would be living near a supermarket/wet market, it is very accessible and convenient to purchase fresh grocery on our own in Singapore, so there will not be any incentive for me to convert. Furthermore delivery of the grocery would cause more carbon emission and packaging waste.

Discounted prices and delivery services sounds like something that would draw me to the platform. But was just wondering how would one ensure the freshness/quality of the food? Given that it is to clear food stocks. Eg: if the packing/delivering time is too long, food might not be as fresh. Hence, if the food is not as fresh as can be found in supermarkets, i might opt to purchase food myself instead.

agree that this is a wonderful problem statement and solution. but am wondering whether will there be any conflict of interest if you onboard diff. supermarkets on this same platform. am wondering how willl u go about getting buy in from these supermarket chains as well. oso wondering how are you going to overcome the logistical challenges? are you going to work with 3rd party logs provider? I think it wld make sense for RedMart to be doing what you are doing.
Interesting concept - wondering what are supermarkets doing with nearing expiry food. Are there any existing tie ups and if sold to consumers. What happens if food are already not fresh, who bears the responsibility? It's unlikely that supermarkets would want such a risk. Also on app- unsure about adoption. It did take foodpanda and grab lots of money before their current market share.

Hello! I think you have identified a pressing issue and crafted an interesting problem statement. Some questions for you to perhaps think about: What would be your business model? Are there existing platforms/organizations that already do things similar to what you are proposing? What is your value proposition that would encourage individuals to use your application? How would you encourage people to download this application?

Getting users and businesses on the app would be a difficult first step. what is so special about your app that would attract both stakeholders?
If a supermarket chain were to take your idea and improve it, what would you do?
agree w Alston on his points about how increasing access to such cheap produce might mean less of such produce for those from less well-to-do backgrounds and that supermarkets might not support such an initiative as people might then just wait for discounts instead of buying at regular prices.

If food is sold at discounted rates through your app, would we see a case in which the disadvantaged (who rely on such produce) get priced out/ lose out to their more well-off counterparts, who tend to have the digital know-how to access such services? At the same time, would your app then create a problem for supermarkets (in other words, would supermarkets support such an initiative), as consumers may now decide to wait for clearance before making a purchase, resulting in a loss in revenue for retail outlets?
