What about those that are not technically capable enough to use the platform? How do you prevent elderly from consuming disinformation from this platform? Would this end up cultivating some bad behavior through the usage of the platform (e.g. toxicity towards others)?

I believe that a potential source could be to work with technology giants, and have a system in place whereby for products that they have discontinued but still have stocks, for it to be converted to a senior-friendly device and used in this program Also, the team could work with online reselling platforms such as Carousell and Facebook Marketplace to curate technology devices at a cheaper cost. The best way would be to ask locals to donate in their used but still working devices, and ensure that the data is wiped before subsequent use.

One important aspect is how would continuity and consistency be ensured? Usually when such activities are being held, there is a need for a common space. Such a set-up is not that easy to come about and would require much planning, therefore many volunteer sessions involving the elderly usually occur on a one-time monthly basis. With the help of technology, through video meeting sessions, definitely it would help to bridge the gap, however many elderly feel afraid of using technology as they do not feel competent enough to be able to understand. Additionally, if a software is used they might not be able to access or even troubleshoot if issues arise. Lastly, many elderly have issues with their eyesight and this may impact the effectiveness of being able to communicate via an online platform.

Since the elderly are involved, the focus needs to be on the proximity of the individuals they can forge connections with. Rather than having activities to be done, many seniors enjoy simply having heart-to-heart conversations with people and to be able to tell their stories. Familiarity with the individuals are important therefore having someone who is in the same block as them, or living right in their neighbourhood, are important in maintaining the connection.

You simply can't. Onboarding of users or even education is an extremely expensive operation for a tech business and that is why most tech companies build on the preface that it's users knows how to use the tool - the smartphone.

Few people (especially youngsters) will commit to the project on a regular basis. Some may participate a few times and build relationships, then suddenly have other commitments and leave. The elderly may feel abandoned as a result.

Perhaps you can make it in a game format, where young people and the elderly can team up and compete against each other. Of course, you'll have to ensure there are some aspects where the elderly would have more advantage, and some aspects where the young people would have the advantage so they would learn to work together. You may seek sponsors to provide attractive prizes so there would be good participation. Unfortunately, this would not be a long-term solution but it could be a start to get people interested in the project.

Technology is not the solution to isolation. Heading this direction will further exacerbate the problem. You see this in young people, the most digitally connected generation, are increasingly suicidal and depressed. If this is the foundation of this project, this problem will become another contributor to the problem it is trying to solve.

Elderly facing social isolation has long been an ongoing problem that has become even more prominent during COVID-19, especially in the circuit breaker period whereby volunteer projects were halted. During the circuit breaker period, I volunteered for this food delivery / grocery shopping program, whereby I will be paired with an elderly who requires such services and depending on their dietary requirement, I would aid in ensuring that they are well fed and knowing that the community has their back. However, the program was subsequently not approved and we were at a loss. I would like to thank the team for having this initiative and I hope that one day I can be a part of the platform that the team would like to create!

As a student who is graduating this coming May, I am very glad to see such initiatives that aim to connect us with more regional opportunities and empower us to be more future-ready. I believe that mentorship is key in bridging the gap. In university, such mentorship sessions with industry professionals are not uncommon, however it is not a coordinated or continuous process. I hope that TYS would be able to guide youths in knowing what to expect from different industries, which jobs do their degree/skill sets apply to, and what else is needed if they would like to pursue a particular career. It might be unusual to say this but I feel that TYS indirectly helps to bridge the differences in social class. For example, friends whose family or relatives are in the finance industry, know to advise them on the skill sets needed and which internship to go to better secure a permanent job, whereas friends who do not know anyone in the industry may find themselves being misguided or simply put, have a more difficult time. I hope that TYS will bring more exposure and opportunities to youth and help all of us excel.
Lastly, the thing about global or regional opportunities is that many Singaporeans do not see themselves working overseas. Reasons included the assumption that they lack many cross-border competencies, or often it is due to personal reasons as well. Therefore having a community to guide and welcome you in another country may be a good incentive for youths to seek better employment opportunities overseas, rather than staying in Singapore to fight in an overly competitive market.
Technology is not the solution to isolation. Heading this direction will further exacerbate the problem. You see this in young people, the most digitally connected generation, are increasingly suicidal and depressed. If this is the foundation of this project, this project will inevitably become another contributor to the problem it is trying to solve.

I serve in the front-line at the heart of the community as a Social Worker and am heartened to hear your team interest to do good for the vulnerable elderly in the area of mental health. In my course of work, I do encounter clients that face mental health issues. I hope my feedback would be good use to your team. There are 3 main issues that your team have to think strategically for success.
1) How would you ensure consent and PDPA is upheld?
2) What kind of platform (physical and digital) are you using?
3) How would you partner with relevant Social Service Agencies and organization from the 3P Sector (People, Public and Private)?
In addition, it would be great to test-bed your idea by starting a pilot in let say a geography or vicinity in Singapore such as Bedok. Your team can gradually increase the coverage and refine your platform with new resources accordingly.
Lastly, it great to have youth passionate to serve the vulnerable and mental health is a vital part of our Total Defence particularly in the area of Social and Psychological Defence. Your team might want to consider the importance of not only recruiting volunteers for your meaningful cause but also training and retaining volunteer through Volunteer Management roles. It is also important to partner with relevant organizations that can help you such as National Youth Council, Youth Corps Singapore and IMDA (to reach out to elderly for digital equality in the event if you opt for digital platform). All the best.

before bridging the mental health support gap, you would definitely have to bridge the technology gap. do the elderly you wish to work with have access to these devices? wifi connection? could you work with partners to sponsor these devices and connection for the elderly first? what about the long term solution? will a partner be willing to sponsor this long term?

whenever a project involves both the elderly and technology, there will definitely be challenges there, but the key lies in how you would want to mitigate those challenges, how are you going to deploy your volunteers or participants to help the elderly with technology? can you teach them?

For whatever you have in mind, conduct interviews and user testing with a wide range of elderly people. Some are tech-savvy and can handle things like e-mail. Others have never used a computer in their life. Some may have smartphones but no idea how to properly use them. Use technology only if absolutely necessary and perhaps find ways to upskill those who don't have the necessary skills to navigate them.

It's a great idea, but how will you execute on it? Have you validated the fact that elderly would want to connect with strangers and engage in activities? What about a solution that targets their family members and tries to improve intergenerational bonding amongst people they are familiar with (assuming they have grandkids and whatnot)?

Elderly adoption of the idea, i feel that they would not be inclined to participate. Maybe providing a form for them to fill up their hobbies and interest before hand, then allocating the youth with similar interest to the specific elderly to enhance the experience and make it enjoyable for both parties.

I think creating an elderly friendly app is a good way for the elderly to connect digitally without the need to meet physically, especially during this covid19 pandemic period. As for the cost, I think it’ll be good if the government can sponsor part of the cost through grants to help our elderly. This way, the high cost can be mitigated. Several fund raising activities can also be carried out to get more funding needed to spearhead creating the elderly friendly app.

I'd recommend a lot of user interviews to figure out exactly what kinds of problems the elderly face, how they're currently trying to solve them (or not), and the kind of solution that would be ideal for their situation. I'm sure that there's no one-size-fits-all and you'll have to figure out who exactly you want to cater to. Personally, I think that a solution which addresses inter-family bonding between grandparents and their adult children and their grandchildren would be great as a lot of families might face this struggle, especially since they may be spread out across the world and barely interact with each other and get close to each other. Otherwise, for those families who are tight-knit across generations, that's great! Then the elderly will already have a support system within their own family. If they wanted to make new friends, they could easily ask their family to help.

I imagine that the elderly and younger generation would meet at a common venue (e.g. community centres) and engage in the activities on the platform. It may be difficult for the elderly and younger generation to engage on the platform on their own/ at their own time, as it can be awkward when both parties have not met at all before and technical glitches could occur. WIth both generations of people at the same place, the younger ones can help with technological problems (if any). At the same time, schools that usually send their students for such community service programmes do not have to come up with activities as the platform would have them planned. In my opinion, physical engagement is still important to the elderly.

This is a tough question and it is a privilege question. Elderly who have the know-how will be able to access, or have the resources (manpower) to access. Having a helpline to troubleshoot with the elderly should they face any difficulty in using it. Holding workshops in different communities to engage the elderly and share about the technology. You can tap on existing pools of elderly population - e.g. through senior activity centers. Appealing to the family members of these elderly by convincing them of the benefits of your app, such that they would also be on board and help the elderly out if need be.

Connecting elderly with others based on common interest, ensuring that the on-boarding process is simple enough for an elderly to do so with minimal help. If some help is needed, ensure that ambassadors are available to help them out at their convenience. Ensuring that the application is inclusive by translating it to different languages and increasing accessibility (option to change size of word etc.)

Big why (which specific mental health problems are we targeting and which demographics?)
Privilege question - elderly who have the know-hows will be more willing to try as they have the resources to access to

In response to "How can we improve on this idea?"

creating a free app maybe but you need to educate elderly on using it and this is typically quite hard. are you able to teach elderly to use technology using Mandarin/ malay/ tamil/ dialects?

In response to "What are some potential problems that we might face?"
elderly might not be able /willing to learn how to use this new platform, more support must be given to introduce this. which elderly are you targeting - those living alone/ poorer elderly/ those who are immobile?

currently, there are many other projects doing inter-generational work. what is special about your project and how do you measure the effectiveness of your project? do consider these pointers. what kind of platform are you using? may want to include more details about it.
