Hello Home Away from Home!! Love your project and what you're doing. This is really a deep seated concern that's often overlooked for our foreign healthcare workers! To achieve maximum impact for nurses in hospitals, I believe you can adopt the following measures: 1.There is a segregation between foreign and Singaporean nurses in the healthcare sector. Having a lack of friendly support locally may be a reason why foreign healthcare workers are homesick. On top of delivering home-cooked meals to them based on their cuisine (which is an awesome initiative), having foreign nurses share about their home town and food cuisine over these lunches (either virtually or physically depending on COVID HAHA) will really aid in cross-learning, and develop better understanding, appreciation and pride (for the healthcare workers) of their ethnicity! Making them feel at home doesn't just mean banking on nostalgia, but rather through education, interaction and a better understanding within the local-foreigner community. 2. I love the idea of having monthly visits. Perhaps with COVID restrictions, you can bring offline communities online with the help of mobile applications, or something as simple as creating Telegram/Whatsapp/FB groups to facilitate the creation of such communities :) 3. Having these foreign nurses cook/ teach other nurses the recipes of their home town (either via an online cooking class etc) will give them a sense of ownership to their heritage. :) This allows others, who don't know how to cook, pick up the necessary skills to cook their country's food in a foreign land like Singapore! 4. Arranging for Food Tours post COVID may also help, where you can bring foreign nurses out in search for similar food (e.g Where to get authentic Indian Food/ Indonesian Food in SG?) in SG! :)

Rather than focusing on mainly connecting them with their homeland, instead look at how we can integrate them into our community and create a new/better/inclusive second home for these frontline warriors

Asides by offering weekly home-cooked meal plans of their cuisine, the team can engage with them visually and auditory, by collecting a pool of money to set up 'mini-restaurants' where these nurses can be themselves for awhile too and engage social workers alligned with their community to offer assistance, sort of like a warm and friendly ambassy monthly.

I think providing platforms / opportunities for foreign nurses to bond and support each other over food would be really helpful. Not sure about the sustainability or logistics of the weekly meal plans though, given that nurses do shift work so their hours would vary week-by-week. Maybe organising get-togethers might be more feasible?

I think just food alone for now isn't going to provide that much comfort. It will be more useful to organise some virtual events (games, themed discussions etc.) for them to connect with other nurses in Singapore who are from their hometown etc.

Offer some form of assistance to their needs. For example, we can conduct monthly workshops to teach them different skillets like how to use mobile phones (for the less mobile saavy), transfer remittances etc. Such workshops would help the newer nurses adapt more quickly to Singapore, while forming bonds with the other attendees. Other than workshops, we could also hold a session to hear more of the difficulties that they face, which would be a good avenue for them to release some stress and provide us feedback, as the job can take a toll on their mental health.

Weekly community gatherings either online or in-person. Not only through food, food related gatherings would allow them to meet people of similar backgrounds but also maybe hold conversational gatherings where they can share and empathize with one another.

Don't just silo them among people in their same ethnic community—sure, the food can remind them of home, but they should be able to mingle with other people as well so that they feel like they belong here

Keep track of the ethnic or national holidays that these nurses might celebrate and try to hold similar celebrations for them here. It is usually during such celebrations that those away from home miss their family and home the most. I do agree with the team that the nurses would feel more supported and understood by those from similar backgrounds. However, I actually think that it is not hard for them to seek out those with similar background on their own. The team might want to consider how their project can help integrate foreign nurses with locals instead. Besides just recreating a home away from home (which is not 100% possible), how about creating a new version of home away from home - one that includes aspects of their respective cultures and also aspects of local Singaporean culture. This way, they might feel more at ease and comfortable being in Singapore.

Is the idea to just bring them some local food that reminds them of home, or will they be eating together with people from similar backgrounds? If it’s just the food, it’s a nice idea, but I’m not sure how it’s supposed to help with their mental health. If there are other people involved, it would be good to not only eat the food, but also initiate discussions about the struggles that they’re facing and provide a space where they can keep in touch with each other on a regular basis (outside of their food get-togethers) as and when they need some support.

Definitely have to identify all the foreign nurses in singapore, perhaps can start with specific hospitals and the types of foreign nurses working in the same hospital as they may face solidarity in the same hospital.

Perhaps make it less racist. As in if the project is done based on hometown, no doubt it is comforting, but it could then mean it's differentiated based on countries, which night be racist. Perhaps an idea to promote racial harmony is to simply bring everyone together just like the kampung spirit and share our hometown meals altogether

Perhaps something small that you can do is to ask several people (1-5 people, may include yourselves) to make a short video showing their appreciation for the nurses, a small but heartwarming gesture to let the foreign nurses know that Singapore is home as well, and that we extremely grateful for them! The video can be played for them while they eat their hometown cuisine :)

Before starting the weekly home cooked meals plan, we should probably do a taste test with some of the nurses to ensure that the food catered indeed suits their taste buds.

Providing venues and platforms for our foreign nurses to be able to interact with their communities and the local can help to breed a sense of belonging and familiarity

i think other then food and cuisine, there can be also group chats that can link all of them together, and also organizing small activities (attractions, sports) in small groups of 8 to allow them to bond with other foreign nurses from other places. this will broaden their social circle and help them make more friends

So cool that you are thinking of 1) foreign workers who are 2) our essential healthcare staff! I really think that the sustainability of your program can be tweaked by including an eye towards inter-community integration. It's wonderful (and easier) for the nurses to be connected to people who come from the same ethnicity/culture, and it would be even more wonderful if something of the Singaporean multi-cultural spirit could be fostered through your project! For example, have you considered getting local families/community groups to be a part of that home-cooked meal plan for them? These local families/community groups do not need to be from the same ethnicity/culture as the foreign nurses. They just have to be willing to learn how to make the meals, and then execute the cooking + prep! Bonus points if you can even get people to open up their homes for a meal. That would be awesome.

Need to first engage the key stakeholders (foreign nurses) and make sure they get adequate wage and training support.

Can first consider consulting the nurses and asking them what they really need. Maybe a google survey with some questions to check in on how they feel, what they think they need in order to feel better, followed by some in depth interviews with people who don’t mind being interviewed.

One of the most essential component to ensuring these foreign nurses feel like they are home, would be to spend time with their family. I would also suggest to initiate discussions with their respective employers to evaluate ways in which a special off day can be provided to these nurses for their family. Similar to the idea of Silver Leave allowing employees to spend time with a mentor for a day.
