Problem: Through tapping on the community's participation and involvement, you might set yourself up for failure if the message does not hit right and hard. People need to see gains and the value is occasionally monetary.
Solution: However, you can still win donations over by working with the law and politicians to individually measure each person's contribution to plastic pollution by tallying with planned scenarios through research and how it can help if they reduce their waste. Art can only go so far in educating and impressing but for the real impact to come, people have to willingly recycle on their own and thus, having artfully made recycling bins propped up at more quantity can lead to greater efforts as people are habitual creatures.

I think art can be impactful depending on how to portray it, but I definitely think there should be a greater purpose to the art. At the moment, there is not enough explanation as to how or what the art is, so it seems like it’s just gonna be a rubbish dump of plastic. What is the gauge? What are we measuring? Usage in an area in a day? Speed or growth? There also needs to be some kind of quality control, what if the bags are soiled and damp etc.
I think quite a large number of the population are aware of the plastic issue, but there hasn’t been a proper solution that is better and easily adopted which is why it’s still a problem.

I think art, especially visual arts have helped me picture and quantify the impact of human activities. Take for example the Bruges Whale exhibition that was at Art Science Museum - an art installation this big makes it difficult for us to ignore. I think art has an important role to play in getting people like me to stop and think.

I do believe this project has great intentions. However, what I think may be a better idea, would be to have a sharing system of reusable bags, like how some neighbourhoods have an umbrella-sharing system. This will firstly and most importantly, reduce the number of plastic bags needed and used. Secondly, it helps remove the barrier of people forgetting or being lazy to bring a reusable bag along with them the first time. There will still be that challenge of bringing it the next time, but I believe if supermarkets don’t give out plastic bags anymore, people are more likely to bring these shares reusable bags.
For the art aspect I believe looking at pictures and having people describing their experiences are great ways of moving hearts. Pictures of beach situations before and after clean ups done by the neighbourhood will be a great way to move people and show them that their neighbours are involved in helping the environment, so should you!

Hello! It’s a creative idea to use art installations to express the idea across to the community. Art installations to raise awareness has been happening around the world. For instance, one of the more famous example would be the plastic whale in Belgium. Plastic bag wastage is a problem in Singapore however it is not the only problem. There are other related problems such as excess plastic packaging in products. So maybe instead of just focusing on collecting plastic bags, the team can consider to collect other plastic materials so as to increase the impact on the plastic waste generated in Singapore.

As mentioned in the question before about how art has impacted me, I think that visual arts play an important role in quantifying the impact of human activities, in this case, the use of plastic bags. But before it can impact anyone, it has to be able to capture attention and be seen - for people to stop and think. So perhaps an important point that you would like to consider would be where your installation will be, and what scale are you planning to have it at? Knowing that supermarkets are often very crowded, I think this might be an important point to consider - how to stand out, yet at the same time be able to work with the space constraints?
Another concern that your team might face would be households not wanting to return their plastic bags as they will be reused for bagging waste. This might affect the uptake of your project. Perhaps another messaging you can include would be to encourage people to keep a bag, and return the rest? Or to incentivize them with a reward system?
I think that the ultimate goal would really be for people to BYO, and I thought that it will be interesting if the art installation can adopt a trolley return and take system, where you take your bags before shopping, and return it the next time - this will definitely help kickstart the habit of bringing your own, and cater to those who find BYO inconvenient. The installation could extend to re-usable bags too, for people to make available the excess bags they have at home and create an entire ecosystem of reused bags.
Very interesting initiative and I wish you great success! Hope that one day I can convince more people to reduce plastic bag usage with your initiative. :)

I think it’s a novel idea, encouraging patrons to return plastic bags - but somehow it feels a bit off tangent to the project objective, which I believe is to lower the barrier of recycling plastic bags and promote the use of reusable bags. In my opinion, there should be a stronger incentive for patrons to return plastic bags since it’s extra effort to bring it out just to form an art installation that people may not see as a practical way to recycle, compared to reusing the plastic bags at home. I would think it may be more effective to angle your solution to increase usage of reusable bags instead!

Interesting idea. If people can make the effort to bring their plastic bags from their home to the supermarket, surely they can also make the effort to bring their own reusable bags? Or even reuse those plastic bags if they’re in good condition? I would think that the main issue is convenience—people don’t want to have to remember to keep reusable bags in their car or bring them out when they want to go to the supermarket. In fact, you might actually be encouraging the use of more plastic bags by saying “oh just bring it to contribute to this art installation”. The aim of increasing recycling is noble, but surely it’d be better to tackle the root of the problem? People might also want to keep their plastic bags to use as rubbish bins, etc…

I think there may be a lack of incentive to persuade people to head down to the grocery store and donate the bag. Even if they do head down, it will likely be along with a trip to the grocer itself to buy more stuff - in this instance, it appears easier to simply reuse the plastic bag for their current items instead.

Art is able to portray the dangers of un-sustainability in creative ways, that manages to tug at the heartstrings of people
I believe the idea of the 'community art installation' is a green engagement strategy to encourage pro-environmental behaviour. Art is a form of storytelling and the team can improve the engagement aspect if you explore various storytelling approaches and their effectiveness to increase participation. Storytelling has been proven in many discipline as a powerful engagement strategy based on decades of social science research. I've conducted an experiment on over 400 participants on the effectiveness of using "hero", "horror", and "learning (facts)" storytelling (of course there're many more types out there) towards towel reuse in hotels. For example, "horror" storytelling depicts a future of doom and natural disaster, so to prevent that, they have to act now. "Hero" paints individual as heroic figures that saved millions of lives due to the actions taken today. Statistically, some storylines were more effective than others and definitely way more effective compared to when no storytelling approach was used. Additionally, males are less likely to engage in pro-environmental behaviours compared to females (and certain storylines were able to increase males' participation). So I believe if the team can tell a story through art, or collaterals to depict why this is important, that can effectively engage the general public/certain demographics, you will increase the participation rate. There are many internal and external stakeholders for such engagement so the team should identify them and how the installation will positively increase engagement. Hope this helps and all the best! Thank you for stepping up to protect our home!

The solution is ,without a doubt , creative. However will this answer the question of reducing plastic wastage? I know that it comes down to changing people's mindset but how effective is ART though? Can it also come in different form of arts that more people might relate too?

Using mediums that are seen as “trash” to some can be interesting in bringing out how we can always think again: how can I upcycle an item to extend its life? This can change the perspective of seeing certain trash as single use.

Helping general public to see single use items as something more valuable (in this case of making an installation out of the plastics). I think this is important in fostering how people see items and can prompt them to consider how they can prolong the life of any items.

Interesting idea! I think it’ll be good if we can already see one example/prototype of how the art installation will look like. This can motivate people to want to help create the installation (that can be displayed in multiple places).
However, considering this long term, I don’t think that it will help the situation as it doesn’t actually help reduce the usage in any way. As of now, many of us keep plastic bags to use for our daily trash. One point to consider is how valuable/impactful the end product can be to the people. :)

I think there is little incentive to return plastic bags when i can use these bags to store my rubbish (since thats the best use of them now) otherwise, encouraging the use and return of reusable tote bags are a better option since these totes can't really be used for anything else and sometimes we end up with excess. instead of buying new ones i will definitely be open to use one of those returned instead.

Art is a great medium in conveying social issues. However, I am not sure on how impactful art is in conveying these social issues in Singapore – might want to do more research on this if you hope to incorporate it into your solution. Alternatively, you could consider focusing on why there is a lack of recycling in Singapore. Could perhaps consider exploring why monetary charges to plastic bags have not been as effective as compared to other countries? Could it be that we value level of convenience? Think it would be great to conduct a survey/field work on the reasons why there is a high consumption of plastic bags/low recycling rates in Singapore.

I appreciate how art is a powerful medium to bring about conversations on difficult and important societal issues and the concept of bringing community together and raising awareness. Here are some of my thoughts on the project idea 1) hygiene and cleanliness issues- reusing bags might spread covid 2) the behaviour change is not sustained (people can just contribute for fun as a one time effort) 3) plastic bags are mostly used to line dustbins at home and are incinerated in singapore. What is the key message the team wants to send? Plastic bags are still essential to everyday life. I am not sure if any company in Singapore can actually recycle and break down the bag into its constituent chemicals and if that even makes business/money sense. If the intention is to encourage people to use their reusable bags or reuse plastic bags(then the word used should not be recycle, one idea might be to have an art installation where people who do bring and use their reusable bag get a special object that they can add to the art piece - it can be like a game where they have to throw it into a hoop high up and it rolls down and hits a bell or sth- kids will love it. Another concept is that kids as the nexus of change within the family is well supported by science - meaning if kids ask parents to use reusable bags, more likely to create a sustained habit over time.

I concur with the points raised by below - but to further add on: When I first read about the project, I was rather confused about the motivations of getting people to RECYCLE their plastic bags. From a life cycle perspective, I do not think it make sense to encourage recycling of plastic bags (esp most of those plastic bags we see today are of a 'low value'). So I think it makes more sense to REFUSE or REDUCE or REUSE plastic bags. Recycling should be the 'last resort'.
I think there should be more elaboration given on functionality of the art installation. As consumers drop off their plastic bags at the return point, does it mean that they can also 'pick up' plastic bags when they need it as well? If it is just a art installation of plastic bags (that can be functionally used), what is the point? How will this art installation trigger action - for people to bring tote bags?

First, where will the collected plastic bags go?
Next and more importantly, do you think your art installation will really result in a paradigm shift and alter sedimented behaviours? Unless art promulgates a truly subversive message, your installation will only be complicit in reproducing the waste problem as a form of greenwashing.
What do you plan to do with the returned plastic bags?
In Australia, the supermarket chain Coles has bins in all its supermarkets to collect used plastic bags to be recycled (made into products). Perhaps can take reference from what they are doing?

We can see from upcycling projects where beautiful art can be created from used items

The idea is a good one, however, there needs to be a greater draw as to "what greater benefits are there for the contributors". Alternatively, perhaps it can be such that plastic bags which are reusable can be reused by the stores, and only those that are deemed not can be use for the art installation.

It's increased awareness through a creative and visually captivating way instead of the usual "preaching"

Not much of a feedback but curious how you will be able to ensure the cleanliness / hygiene of the installation, things could get icky pretty fast if pests approach.
Would still be best if all supermarkets stop issuing plastic bags altogether since people are bagging their plastic bags in the reusable bags.

Art has the ability to portray or depict the realism of the overuse of plastics.
