Problem Statement

The average Singaporean takes 146 plastic bags from our supermarkets each year. The increasing use of plastic bags, coupled with a lack of recycling, translates into environmental harm and a lack of awareness about this issue. Currently, some grocers charge for plastic bag usage, but monetary penalties alone are not sufficient for us to bring our own bag. There is also a lack of recycling points in Singapore. How can we tackle this issue and lower the barrier of recycling plastic bags with a creative approach?

Project Description

ASTAR aims to implement a plastic bag return point at grocery stores that doubles up as a community art installation called Plastic Feathers, only complete when enough bags are added to it, in order to encourage patrons to return bags.

Through tapping on the community's participation and involvement, they hope to convey the message about the negative impact of excessive plastic usage through the medium of art.
