Problem Statement

The elderly, a growing age demographic in Singapore, is often cooped up in their homes without any companionship or activities to occupy themselves with. This has resulted in mental health issues becoming more prevalent amongst elderly residents.

How can we adapt existing activities to assist elderly residents with their mental health?

Project Description

Project Audere is an arts programme targeted towards elderly residents residing in HDB flats.

Inspired by murals and children’s artwork on display at several HDB void decks, the project aims to provide elderly residents with the opportunity to develop their cognitive abilities and express their creativity through art.

Local artists will work with the elderly and bring their ideas to life through the painting of murals in HDB void decks, which aids them in their mental health while beautifying these “open spaces”.

Printed brochures in multiple languages as not all elderly are english speaking. Work with Mediacorp, old folks watch a fair bit of television.

Find some advisors with various skillsets to learn from. Work very closely with the elderly that the team is serving. Hear from them directly what is it that they really enjoy and need. (Market sentiment)

Elderly can submit their art designs, people can vote and the art work can be drawn. Those who did not get their art work chosen can also join in painting the mural.

One radical idea is to move the murals to online as well. Potentially the elderly could also create art in their own homes and professionals can help to turn them into digital artworks and even NFTs that could be distributed as collectibles by government agencies and art associations. It will help to drive up prominence and interest in the project.

In response to "How Can We Improve?"

Its definitely a cheerful project but i am a little concerned for murals parts coz you guys have to get official permission for that and have to also consider the sustainability aspect of it as well. But other than that i believe that the elderlys would definitely benefit from this alot

In response to "How Can We Improve?"

It\'s quite difficult to reach out directly to elderly - perhaps, try via existing arts programmes by NGOs or senior activity centres under void decks?
