Problem Statement

Tape currently used for the enforcement of safe distancing has to be continually replaced, creating vast wastage while tape adhesives are also damaging the surfaces of seats.

How can we adopt a more sustainable safe-distancing practice that is more aesthetically pleasing and provide additional value?

Project Description

Team Sera aims to redefine safe-management measures by creating a more sustainable product for the enforcement of safe management measures.

The team will develop an affordable, easy to use, compact and aesthetically pleasing replacement to the tapes typically used today. Instead of adhesives, adjustable velcro straps and elastic bands will be used to reduce the damage incurred on seats and tables. The product can be used for queue management and area zoning for corporate events and food operators.

In response to "While still currently living with the pandemic, how much more desirable do you think our product will be at ensuring safe-distancing compared to the current methods of wastefully and un-aesthetically using tape?"

at least 50%, even better if it is cheap or affordable

It will definitely be well-sought after as its benefits of being non-damaging to surfaces is something many shop owners/general users look for in good tapes!

With the factors of compact and aesthetically pleasing being included, the device can be very useful for home owners or shop owners in displaying items like securing a poster on the wall or taping down a mannequin without making it look messy.

It’ll be a good substitute esp if it’s easy to remove and won’t leave residues

If your product withstand wear and tear, can be reused time and time again, and it\'s priced similarly to the existing tapes used, then it could be a better solution. However, if it is more expensive than tape, and last just as long, then it might not be practical. Aesthetics doesn\'t matter that much as long as it does it\'s job and it\'s affordable since it\'s a cost that is to be borne by the hawkers and it\'s not practically to pass on the additional cost incurred from purchasing a very expensive tape if there is a much cheaper option available.

I feel that it still generates waste though, except with different materials.

I personally dont think there would be much of any difference since its mostly up to the person themselves if they want to adhere to the measures. But a more aesthetic looking product could help to alleviate the irritation some may feel when looking at jarring red tapes

it must be cheap to be implemented. velcro at the end will still be dirtied and who is going to consolidate and wash them. more thoughts should be placed into this idea instead

Tape is very common household item and is sold at cheap prices. While those may not be as quality as this item, the selling point of being aesthetic/ compact may not be enough to be sold and drive sales. This item can be marketed or sold in partnership with major household Brand’s like Ninja Van/Nippon Paint, to showcase the versatility and uses of the product. Like masking of boxes for deliveries and usage while painting. All of such weighs a better selling point while will help this product stay in the market for a long while.

Hey guys! Have yall partnered with any organisations to test this product out? Coz what you can actually do is that partner with small cafes, and stores to implement this first. Then this will allow you to gain credentials that will backs you up when you guys are ready to work with government agency. All the best!

I don\'t think this is a big enough problem that consumers want to solve. Rather, if you are developing a tape that has a better purpose, for example a tape that you can use for your pipe etc, it would have a better market.

In response to "How Can We Improve?"

Few questions: 1. Is the product reusable? 2. Is it able to be cut / sized accordingly based on the length of the seat / area required to be fenced? 3. Is the product reusable? Also, In the distant future when covid becomes truly endemic, there may not be a need to tape up seats anymore. To tackle this issue, it seems like your team\'s intention is to create a multipurpose device can be used for other purchases, e.g. to separate the crowd. The example you gave is queue management. However, right now there is already such product in the market for queue management which are the retractable poles which are widely used in many places. How is your product able to differentiate itself from these existing products that are already in the market? How then can your product carve out a niche for itself in the over-saturated markets?

Instead of one-use, team could consider how to make the product reusable, so that it is better than plastic tapes. Otherwise, aesthetics aside, is there really a value-add for the product over the plastic tape which also serves the same purpose?

I feel that this just shifts the problem to generating waste with different materials. Consider using recycled materials to produce?

With such huge consumption of such product, will it still be environmentally friendly as you would need to generate such a big customized \"tape/strap\"?
