How can we build a more supportive community for low-income mothers to seek child-helping mentorship as they parent their child through growing years?
How can we build a more supportive community for low-income mothers to seek child-helping mentorship as they parent their child through growing years?
Sustaining Employability of Low-income Women & Families (SELF) aims to build the first supportive and interdependent community for low-income women to seek child-helping mentorship. It involves a technology-enabled facilitation process where two beneficiaries are matched to create a partnership. Unlike traditional childminding services that aims to provide solutions, SELF Child-helping Mentorship empowers them to be each other’s solution and foster a sense of responsibility.

Seek to understand first as to why they still remain at where they are working. Is it for the time flexibility, qualification limit or other personal reasons. Do not be too quick to advice without understanding. Upon understanding,

In response to "How Can We Improve?"
Sometimes the low-wage workers have already \"accepted\" their fate. The biggest challenge will be to change their mentality. Which takes time and relationship to journey with them to change that. Seek to understand their situation holistically first. Alternatively, the team can also partner with companies that do not mind hiring them.

need to elaborate more about engagement methods.. current approach is quite high level and success relies on execution

You seem to act as the bridge between workers and intiatives, NGOs and even the gov. I am wondering if there was a way for you to more effecitvely reach out to your community, given that there are already so many resources out there on social media, online etc. How can you make sure that you aren\'t just another platform workers arent aware about? Perhaps partnering with local companies that employ low-wage workers, however ambitious this may be, can get to the bottom of this issue for reals.

Market the project so that it can be reached.

The top three questions touch on three different aspects which correlates and affects low-wage women: 1)social - how employers treat the staff will be how the other employees treat the staff. A good/considerate boss equates to a good team. 2)Lack of awareness of resources. 3)And mental/physical wellbeing. Kind of wondering if there is a consideration for communication/negotiation skills and personal grooming being added to the programmes. These could touch on the self-esteem and help to improve the mental/physical wellbeing of some unmotivated/exhausted individuals. I believe the progress of this project so far is well thought out. Thank you for this effort to help relatable women out there.

I think perhaps social workers could be incorporated here, or perhaps at least interview then to get some more insights since some social workers also work with low-income families and aid them to become more financially independent, as well as help with other issues that they may face.

This initiative definitely addresses one of the most prominent issues. I was just wondering about the benefits the company will reap from implementing your project. Because if they have some kind of incentive to hold on to, they will more likely to hold their end of the deal.

Raising awareness of Low wages can be sensitive at times, majority of the people may not really understand and empathise. Some may misunderstand what people are going through as well, Perhaps to interview both ends on how they feel about this particular issue. Having opinions of both ends would really help bring awareness to the insensitivity of the majority and raise awareness of Low wage culture.

I feel that you guys can improve by reaching out to partner with MOM as well as other charities who support low waged and skilled women to really empower them and form a bridging community. You can also partner up with companies who support women empowerment to provide jobs for women who have just came back from labour and are thinking of going back into the workforce.

It is difficult to change working conditions for all low wage workers. However, if there is a consolidated page that shows employers who offer better conditions for low wage workers, where low wage workers can apply for a job on that page, perhaps that can be feasible. Overall, should encourage upskilling and support at every step of the journey. Keep up the good work!
In response to "How Can We Improve?"
Introduce industry specific and transferable skills programme to low wage workers. Bear in mind most of them would take on a couple of jobs as they exchange hours for basic wages. Transition should be smooth and perhaps can provide a subsidy/allowance while they upskill.

Making sure how both employer and employees can benefit from this program so that it could make the effort more doable.
