Reimagining Tourism

Problem Statement

Sentosa is seen as a tourist destination filled with attractions. However, people overlook the rich biodiversity found within the island – this lack of concern translates into irresponsible behaviours that affect wildlife.

How can we encourage more environmentally sustainable guest behaviours on Sentosa?

Project Description

Reimagining Tourism aims to raise awareness about Sentosa’s biodiversity and encourage tourists to adopt more environmentally-conscious behaviours.

The team will develop a mobile game where users can gain essential knowledge about the threats our natural environment face to increase their awareness and motivate them to become more environmentally conscious. In the game, users must reclaim ‘Sentosa’ which is set in a dystopian reality from the hands of ‘monsters’ such as plastic pollution. Users can also interact with game characters modelled after animals that can be found in Sentosa to learn important facts about them.

In response to "What would encourage you to be more environmentally friendly as a tourist at Sentosa?"

I would say incentives and rewards would be a big pull factor - given that its Sentosa, and things are not cheap there. Another thing would be if I could directly see the impact of my sus actions somehow, then yes, I would be encouraged to be more enviornmentally friendly.

I love this idea because I love learning about biodiversity. I wont be able to say the same for my friends who aren\'t as keen to learn about wildlife - it takes time to go and download an app just to play a game that they aren\'t really interested about. Also I didnt know there was wildlife in sentosa!

In response to "Do you think learning about biodiversity will encourage you/others to adopt more environmentally-conscious behaviour (e.g reducing plastic waste)? Why/why not?"

Yes, only if there is an established link between biodiversity and environmentally conscious behaviors. What would the impact of not so environmentally concious behaviors on the biodiversity? If learning about biodiversity made me appreciate biodiversity more, and there was an established link between biodiversity and env-friendlt behaviours, then yes I will be inclined - appeals to my logic!

Depends on whether there are incentives. Unlikely to do so without, since I prefer my trip to Sentosa to be less about mobile device use. Also, I prefer not to download apps that are for single destination use, it does not sound as though I can use this outside Sentosa.

Incentives such % discounts off total bill if we opt out of taking plastic bags when we purchase an item would be good. Also, visible reminders and random environmental fun facts displayed in the form of animal standees around locations that tend to generate the most waste would be great as a reminder to adopt more environmentally conscious behavior.

In response to "Would you be willing to try out an app that is comparable to Pokemon (with an added 3D element comparable to Animal Crossing) that seeks to introduce the wildlife in Sentosa as the “pokemons”? Why/why not?"

Maybe, depending on how much physical elements are incorporated into the app. If i were to visit Sentosa, my primary objectives would of course be to visit the places of interest (E.g. USS), or go to the beach to relax and chit chat with my friends. In other words, I won\'t be using my phone much. Games like Pokemon requires one to be more or less fixated on my phone and that kind of defeats the purpose of heading to Sentosa in the first place.

In response to "Do you think learning about biodiversity will encourage you/others to adopt more environmentally-conscious behaviour (e.g reducing plastic waste)? Why/why not?"

No. Learning about biodiversity doesn\'t automatically translate to taking actions to adopt more environmentally conscious behaviors, particularly when players only learn about the characteristics of an animal. While this game is geared towards getting players to befriend the animals, and learn how their actions e.g. leaving plastic waste around, might potentially impact them, it doesn\'t give players an opportunity to put what they have learnt into action. Perhaps it would be better to include more physical aspects into game, such as getting players to pick up plastic waste. Getting players to put what they have learnt into action will be better to help instill environmentally conscious behavior within them as they will realize how simple it actually is be to be environmentally conscious.

As I mentioned previosly, for users that arent as keen about biodiveristy, going to the appstore to download a game specifically to learn about wildlife in sentosa may be a little bit of a turn off. Is there any way we can nudge users to take the extra step of downloading an app? Or is it possible to switch to a website, and they just need to scan a qr code? This would possibly increase the rate of adoption of your idea, when it takes less effort and is easy!

Tourists and visitors to Sentosa are unlikely to be frequent visitors, even if they are regular visitors. Should the team intend for the impact of this initiative to go beyond a visit to Sentosa, what are the channels to create lasting impact? Perhaps the medium (app or otherwise) should point out how biodiversity on Sentosa can affect life elsewhere.

An augmented reality game is definitely attractive. You guys could also consider doing real life activities maybe. So you guys could maybe explore some ideas in that arena as well

As mentioned earlier in the other responses, games like pokemon requires one to be more or less fixated on their phones and that defeats the purpose of heading to Sentosa in the first place. It\'s better to include more physical aspects and elements to this game, such that players will get to interact more with the living environment rather than mobile phone itself. For instance, getting players to put what they have learnt into action, e.g. opting for no plastic bags during a purchase, and getting the cashier to perform some form of validation via a code on the app.. Also, while gamification and rewards may be a way to raise awareness in the short term for new users to the app, how can the app continue to retain old and existing users in the long term since the content might get repetitive.

In my opinion, the team could consider a stronger value proposition. The game may interest kids more but may not get the attention of adults unless there\'s a larger purpose to the game. If it\'s about learning the biodiversity, I could always search on the internet.

The game should try to appeal to both adults and children. Many a times, usually adults make a bigger impact on learning to be more sustainable, influencing kids along the way. Hence other than the game there could be some elements where completing some mcq or small quizzes allows the adult to win vouchers etc
