Problem Statement

Most medical professionals are overworked with gruelling long hours of duty and witness real life and death scenarios every day. As a result, many of them suffer from depression, anxiety, burnout, and PTSD.

How can we better care for our healthcare workers and meet their mental health needs?

Project Description

LAGOM aims to normalise and reframe how psychiatric illness among healthcare workers is viewed – that it should be treated with the gravity as we do any other medical condition, and not as a character flaw or a sign of weakness.

The team will develop a platform that is customised based on the needs of healthcare professionals. It will serve as a marketplace for mindfulness resources, Psych First-Aid courses and a place where healthcare workers can share experiences, discuss issues and find comfort in the community forum.

I think I will not take them for granted. They are not machines who can magically treat people, but human beings who try their best. Furthermore, healthcare professionals have a life outside of the hospital.

I would treat that with the same level of respect and dignity that I would any other person. While I believe that healthcare workers suffer from burnouts, I am of the opinion that persons from other professions suffer from the same burnouts. For example, workers in the F&B industries or teachers often meet verbally abusive customers which can lead to burnout and depression. As such, I believe that anyone in any profession should be accorded the same level of respect and understanding.

this is good. I like it. especially the top down policy change needed. but as we all know when we are stressed out fighting fire after fire, telling someone to take 5 mins to breathe may not be the most feasible if the root of the fire is not put out or the other systemic issues are not fixed p.s just wondering if its possible to actively seek out the feedback of the ones you are serving the health care workers and ask them what do they need the most and see if we can match it up to them be it helping them find some tune to breathe or looking after their kids in childcare after childcare hours maybe some volunteering p.p.s or educate us on how we can be better patients to care for, to make their job easier

Since medical health professionals are overworked and probably feel very tired, why not improve the welfare by including a physical space for them to rest in the hospital? Or improve the beds that they have when they are resting or on stand by? For instance, warm eye pads and comfortable bolsters can be provided in a place with rugs and ambient lighting. That space can be used for workshops and other initiatives to foster awareness.

The life of a healthcare physician is hectic, but if we love our work we don\'t feel like working. So, passion is all about. And also a speciality can affect your personality so choose your speciality very carefully according to your mindset. Some people choose speciality because it\'s great or give so much reputation. One shouldn\'t follow that becoz at that end all those false thinking will disappear.

I think it be good to have experts come in and give bite size session. The definition of bite size is nothing more than 30mins due to the busy scheduling of health care professionals being hectic and any available rest time be for their rest and self care. It is hard to get everyone to attend but we have people who are interested in topics, therefore we should archive a library of such sessions and allow them to access. I think you have to consider how to make a forum safe and anonymous. The reason being is if we advertise the site, there can be people who are not in the healthcare industry who have some misgivings with certain healthcare system, treatment or staff may use the forum to sow discord and attack which may be counterproductive to providing safe and supportive environment

It’s a shame that we often neglect health care workers’ feelings and at times be inconsiderate to them as well. It’s really impressive that you guys are doing a lot to help them. Maybe you guys could create a community where health workers can gain emotional support and stuff. Like a community they would also feel belonged to. This community doesn’t have to exclusive to just health workers. They could also have other people who wants to support our healthcare workers as well. Activities , or sports challenges can be arranged as well so that they get to spend their time with the community and create a environment where they support each other.

I\'m not really convinced that a ground-up initiative to \"foster a culture that recognises mental health and gives it the same importance as physical health\" is possible, given the kind of importance \"physical health\" gets; being on-call 24/7 and working shift hours are generally recognised as being not very good for health. Of course, I appreciate the sacrifices made by our healthcare professionals in keeping the system working. I just wonder; can you really work WITHIN this kind of system to raise \"better mental health of healthcare professionals\" in priority, when various sacrifices are already expected and built into the system? However, I do recognise that there is a realistic limit on what the team can achieve, and I think this is a good first step towards changing the future of healthcare. Keep it up, and thank you for fighting on the real frontlines in this never-ending war!

Elaborate on the marketplace offerings and market them to not just healthcare professionals but the general public too. This will increase take-up rate as sometimes the medical workers might be too busy to know about the marketplace, and their loved ones will be potential customers as well as they can take up customised mindfulness resources taken to equip them with the right expertise to lend a hand to take care of the medical workers\' mental health as well.

I like that you are trying to address policy issues. However, I am wondering how the team would be trying to affect policy change through the use of data as I believe that MOH/MOHH would already have these data and would have already conducted such studies through their employee engagement or pulse surveys. Would the opposite way work if the team try to elicit change in just one hospital/healthcare workplace and show the positive data/results/impact to policy makers? This might be a stronger selling point than showing data that they would probably have on hand already. Also, another consideration is that healthcare workers already have limited \'me\' time or time to unwind. Rather than curating courses for them to attend which may further eat into their rest time, would it be helpful to put up bite-sized yet impactful materials in places that they would have frequent access to as part of their work hours (e.g. in the lift, staff cafeteria, toilets)?

I think one of the greatest thing you can explore is to have a bit more welfare. As the healthcare system stretches i propose instead of psych first aid, why not have a counsellor attached and an open system. Maybe explore writing reasons for leave and normalise it. Or perhaps a good will treat from the public in an app or social media page and working with singhealth or nuhs cafes or kopitiam where they are free drinks for med professionals

1. This is a worthwhile project that clearly addresses an important issue, especially with COVID-19. I wonder how you will manage the industrial relations piece, seeing that hospital management/MOH/MOHH would have an incentive to shut down critical posts (or even seek out and penalize users for breach of contract). There is also a need to consider the implications on patient trust as well as values such as collegiality in the workplace. All of these considerations points to the need for clearly-defined community standards and moderations systems, such that the forum is not just a site for ranting. 2. I appreciate the attempt to foster solidarity between both doctors and allied healthcare professionals. That said, the demographic of healthcare workers is really broad, so perhaps there is also a need to provide more targeted resources for different segments (including upstream e.g. for medical students). 3. I love that your plan includes an advocacy element (capturing data for policy change), thereby recognizing that there are structural factors to healthcare worker mental health.

I\'m not exactly sure how to go about doing this but it would be good if senior healthcare workers could share the common pitfalls with fresh grads who have just started working. I have friends who were positive about helping others once they graduate only to become jaded really quickly after the initial workplace struggle.

I think you guys could share raw unfiltered/uncensored stories of working healthcare professionals who are under the pressures of their line of work during the pandemic. Hearing what they experience through their perspective helps bring new insights on how we can help and support these healthcare professionals in their mental well-being. Of course, some may choose to remain anonymous while others will want to speak up more, so you will need to have interviews with them and relatable resources to judge how effective your campaigns with them will be.
