Problem Statement

Mental health stigma is still common especially in Asian culture, making it difficult and stressful for individuals to seek help and support when they are in need due to the fear of being judged by people around them.

How can we educate individuals about mental health and at the same time remove the stigma?

Project Description

frankie is a mental health and wellness application that enhances emotional wellbeing with the help of daily wellness journeys. Users take a wellness journey to learn the importance of mental health, and better understand and take steps in improving themselves.

They work with mental health and wellness practitioners to develop lifelong science-backed mental health and wellness programs for users that:

(i) Grows with their everyday wellness programs,
(ii) Rewards users for their wellness progress, and
(iii) Enhances physical and emotional well-being

Yes, especially with WFH and HBL, the space you spend at home to rest is now also a space for your work/school. Additionally, a lot of the times, work has to be brought home to hit deadlines.

Yes, definitely. Previously, when our laptops were in office, once you leave work, you are done for the day. Now, with the laptops at home, there is the blurring between work and life and the feeling of a constant need to be connected even when it is part the work hours.

Even without work from home, work is still brought home/ done from home as preparations are needed and OT are also completed from home. I think work from home reduces a lot of travelling time and the ability to be punctual is actually easier to achieve. Most time lack is caused by travelling to offices, places to work.

Yes, sometimes working hour blends into personal time. This means that we have greater flexibility over working hours, but also that you all sometimes be expected to work at odd hours or drag working time into weekends. Quality of work has also decreased since I am more frequently distracted by the people around me at home and sometimes feel too comfortable to focus on work on hand.

Yes, but I feel that this has been the case even while studying in university. With project meetings and other commitments outside of \"office hours\" and constantly eating into personal time, both play and work have become more intertwined which may not necessarily be a bad thing.

I have sought out new exercising habits including swimming to relax my mind and heart. Also made intentional efforts to keep in touch with my community of support - including friends whom I have not met for very long due to work commitments. I also tried self-reflection with the help of spiritual podcasts on Spotify; as well as this mental health app called Intellect.

In response to "Working from home has more freedom, but do you feel that the gap between personal and working space is now in the greyish space?"

Yes, I have sought many ways to establish a boundary between work and life but it is very difficult especially in a competitive society like Singapore. As my work involved international meetings, I had to stay up late almost every week beyond working hours to accommodate to colleagues in the US. Furthermore, the lack of physical interactions also worsen trust among colleagues and bosses. It is harder to communicate one\'s thoughts and read behavioural nuances as everything is now virtual. As such, many of us get burnt out.

I think my experiences at work have taught me the importance of mental well-being. That aside from physical rest, the mind needs to rest as well - and I feel this is often neglected in our society. Health needs to viewed holistically, not just physical aspects but the mental mind as well.

In response to "Working from home has more freedom, but do you feel that the gap between personal and working space is now in the greyish space?"

Yes, I personally feel that the gap is now in the greyish space because there is almost no separation of personal and work space, which leads to little separation of personal and work life. By working at home, adults are more prone to working overtime because they are only an email or text away from their boss. They won’t be able to make any excuses to not get the task done because all their work equipment such as laptops are easily accessible and since they are at home, they are expected to be free majority of the time.

Given that mental wellness is ambiguous and likely differs from person to person, how does the team envision calibrating its platform to achieve positive outcomes? For instance, articles and wellness journeys may not be suitable for all users, and may only provide single perspectives on what mental wellness should be.

Do we have short content that can be readily available to look through to seek advise without have to go through the process of using the app. Great for people with short attention spans and tight schedule. Think about how to get people to take the time to use the app.

Instead of reading the information, can it be in a form of podcast.

consider sharing with the users relevant quotes/ideas that can engage users as they reflect and jot down their thoughts. this could open new doors to their thinking and trigger new perspectives that are more helpful in perceiving their situations.

Love what you\'re doing team frankie! Especially the gamification part is intriguing to me. My suggestion/ proposition: let\'s work together. I\'m from LAGOM and I believe we have a confluence of ideas, and together, we can create a safe mental health ecosystem for our Healthcare Professionals, and society at large (:

I feel that you guys can improve on the marketing aspect, in order for more awareness about this gamified platform, you guys can host giveaways and game competitions where there are gifts for grabs. Following that, you guys could also ensure that there are videos on how the games are like to really spark people\'s attention to the platform given that there are tons of mental health apps out there currently.

This platform certainly sounds really great especially due to its convenience. I would suggest that you guys look into arranging activities in real life as well. I believe that f2f always brings about greater impacts. Also it can be used to form a support group as well.

make tele visits to mental doctors discreet as people may be fearful of teasing on the platform. anonymity is key. Create a community where people can share stories, while others can comment below it , create learning spaces and moral of stories akin to reddit.

I am not convinced that mood monitoring can be carried out with just an (app? not too sure what your solution is). Unless there is some sort of facial recognition/physical device monitoring, I don\'t really see how this can be made accurate to a degree that can give your AI actionable data to suggest journeys. However, you seem to know what you\'re doing based on the impressive numbers in your progress. Keep it up! Would love to play the game when it\'s out :)

This is a wonderful idea, to consolidate different wellness features in a one-stop app. I especially like the framing of \"wellness journeys,\" which serves as an apt metaphor for what we are all trying to achieve. One thing I would be mindful of is the potential effect for extrinsic motivation (such as FairPrice vouchers) in crowding out more intrinsic forms of motivation. This may increase desired behaviors in the short term, but the psychological impact (based on research) may not be long-lasting. If we go down the path of gamification, perhaps the \"real-world rewards\" can be more specifically tied to mental wellness, e.g a self-care package. Also consider other strategies to encourage participation e.g. social norming with the use of leaderboards; anchoring effects by indicating how much time the average Singaporean exercises/meditates etc.

I like that your idea incentivises users using the reward system which I find will be effective in getting them to complete wellness journeys. Perhaps on top of reading information on improving mental health and wellness, there could also be mental health webinars for users to be involved in which would be beneficial as users can also share their insights while gaining reward points at the same time.

I love how AI is used to help track moods and that there are opportunities for teleconsultation services. I also like how this initiative focuses on getting individuals to first understand themselves first before they can work on addresses their (and potentially that of others) challenges. Not really an area for improvement but a suggestion would be to include scenarios that users can click on to show them how different actions lead to different scenarios. For example, the character is feeling down. Option 1: Go to sleep and try to sleep the sadness away. Option 2: Jot down your feelings in a mood journal to try to sense make at a later time. Option 1 can result in someone feeling sad when they get up because they do not understand why they are sad and how they can address the \'trigger\' in future. Option 2 can lead to someone being able to make sense of their \'triggers\' and to understand how they can avoid or come up with a solution to address them in future. This scenario activity can help users to learn new ways of addressing any challenges they may have that may differ from their usual behaviours.

I like the rewards part of the App. I also like that it is like a daily journal so that user can be more aware of themselves and put time in for self care and self improvement which can improve mental wellness. I also like the articles as it consolidated many users journey of recovery from their situation which can share with other users that they are not alone and this is normal for many people to encounter such problems but there is a solution to it. The link to a therapist is also very helpful as those who are in need of help can turn to someone with the ability and knowledge to guide them towards the right way to walk out of their situation. Sometimes due to bad relationship with parents or difficulty to speak to adults, a professional can help the user better to faster seek improvement in their situation. I also like the AR Wellness journey as it can be a motivation for the person to look beyond their issues and to look forward to something they love like travelling and to keep going on. I think more sponsors and creators will be helpful to solidify the App.

I think this is a very good idea - I immediately thought of it as a mental health version of Strava. Maybe having a journal function would help - eg allow the user to make an entry within the app and write down what he/she did, plus what they feel about it.

Constantly tell them they do not need to thrive on the other validation of people. They are who they “tell” themselves to be, not what others say of them, of course encouragement would be good. If they their identity is build up firmly at adolescence and confidence is built up, they tend to do much better in whatever they are doing, as they can handle any criticism that comes their way (and to know how to make “honest mistakes” in a “safe space” to fail, deal w it, process the emotion n get back stronger is important too).

i am a very visual person so the adorable illustrations and character design definitely helps. the use of artificial intelligence definitely intrigues me as I feel like the current mental health apps available in the market are lackluster in terms of a more personable and gamified approach. i think having a gamified approach will help make mental wellbeing something to look forward to instead of dread!

There are already apps out there providing similar services. Intellect is one such app. Distinction of what you provide is not clear.

What is the team trying to educate the user on? Is there a risk that someone who is well adjusted after going through the material, starts questioning if he/she has a mental health condition? Would we be over-medicalizing things? I personally would like to have resources that teach me how to better support someone who needs help. I think that\'s more lacking now.

I think what is missing is how mental wellness, despite it being a very personal experience, is very much socially influenced. It is always comforting to know that there is a community supporting our mental wellness journey or being alongside us while we are there, so it will be good to have a feature where we can see friends who are on the app and be able to perhaps send encouragements/share secret conversations with them.

I think the idea of having a character and timeline for wellness journies to improve stickiness is a great idea to motivate users to continue using the platform! Perhaps a function that analyses the user\'s daily activities and moods would be helpful in showing and informing them which activities are correlated with better moods. This would hopefully encourage the cultivation of healthy habits.

In response to "How Can We Improve?"

I would suggest a more interactive platform that allows users to connect with one another. People with mental health may struggle with common issue - and sometimes, it is good to know that there is someone like-minded who is facing the same problem as you. That way, they can identify with the other party\'s experiences and understand mental health struggles together. Otherwise, people with mental health issues may feel stigmatised and left out. In overcoming mental health struggles, one needs a live community or support system. While wellness articles or testimonials might be helpful, they are often passive tools that individuals might not use. Humans need interaction to grow stronger; and this works best if there are some interactions between people of mental health. :)

Firstly, I feel that for the thought journey section, it will be good if you are able to add a self reflection component. For example, for the different categories such as work, social and family, under the sliding bar there can be a small text box for the user to type down what caused them to feel this way and the emotion they are feeling at this moment of time. Through this, it will allow the user to process their thoughts and feelings instead of just using the sliding bar to rate their day and forgetting why they rated their day this way. Secondly, I personally think that working with local organisations such as the health promotion board will be helpful because they have conducted mental wellness activities in the past, so they may be able to help you to improve your overall project since they have worked with people who suffer from mental health issues and they know the needs of those people. Moreover, if possible, they may be able to help endorse and promote your project. Lastly, I am also interested in knowing whether the therapists will be on standby 24/7 or only at certain times of the day. I think the availability of the therapists should be explicitly stated for the users because a user may need a teleconsultation appointment asap e.g. at 3am late in the night. Will the therapists be available to support the user during late hours or will they be unavailable? If they are not available, are there any other hotlines the users can call for emergency support? But overall I think that this project is very good and well directed with a clear goal in mind. I also think that this project is moving in the right direction and it’s a very creative project, thank you for putting in effort to help those who are in need of support. All the best and I hope that this project will be a success 😁
