Problem Statement

Food waste is one of the biggest waste streams in Singapore, growing by around 20% over the last 10 years. Food waste makes up half of the 1.5kg of waste discarded daily by households.

How can we reduce food waste and inculcate good sustainability practices to increase our food security?

Project Description

EzCompostr aims to grow a passionate community of Singaporeans who are active in repurposing their household food waste through composting.

The team hopes to redefine and simplify the composting experience by equipping Singaporeans with the relevant knowledge to grow quality crops through training workshops, online videos and a cross-sharing community forum on their digital platform. The platform will also provide a centralised marketplace where users can trade and sell compost and gardening crops.

The team can consider a community based approach whereby there are neighborhood projects for composting and gardening that allows everyone to participate and reap the fruits of their labor. The main issue is finding the space for composting and gardening. Venues that could be considered are unused areas in carparks, rooftops, walkways, etc. for gardening and composting.

In response to "How Can We Improve?"

Would it be useful to (1) focus on encouraging urban farming and (2) promote urban farming and agriculture? This can include YouTube videos to educate on how to easily compost food waste into soil as fertilisers. The objective need not be to “reduce food waste” because food waste are not an issue by itself (e.g. unlike plastic, food waste are biodegradable hence no urgency to reduce). Overall good effort and best of luck!

think individual act communal: Composting is a new thing in Singapore, and could be daunting to many Singaporeans who have no idea where to begin and what is the value of composting. Most are aware of the impact of food waste and want to help reduce it. Suggest EzCompostr can work with community gardens to create community compost projects, where the composting will be done by a few experienced individuals who can guide interested newbies. The composted materials can be used in community gardens, and share the harvest with residents. this way we reduce the barriers to entry and minimise personal risks (i.e. attract flies, pests; bad odour), hopefully encouraging more people to be more aware of food waste and how we can salvage food waste.

Hands-on activities and talks from professionals is definitely intriguing but i was just wondering how can you guys make this project sustainable. You guys can definitely charge a small sum of money from the people who are attending the workshops. Or otherwise, you could invest in professionals who can train volunteers who can then conduct workshops. The volunteers can pass their knowledge to the next set of volunteers as well. In this way it will be more sustainable as well.

Team can consider the value proposition of the initiative. Increasing awareness of composting and getting people to start doing so are inherently different (i.e., I may be aware of composting but may not want to start it at home for various reasons).

img placeholder

In response to "How Can We Improve?"

1) usage of compost - to think and list down the ways we can use compost. Large population of Singapore live in Hdb, some without garden communities - where can we use the compost on? 2) program to sell compost / fertilizer to farms / nurseries 3) location to nurture compost - large population live in hdb. Given the hot weather and the humidity of Singapore, there is bound to have smell for rotten food. No one wants the smell to be emitting from the kitchen of their home. Perhaps there can be a location set outside of the home compound where the community can work together to create compost.

composting feels very inaccessible when approached on a household to household basis, I\'m aware of the general steps but unable to do it because of constraints, which I am sure apply to many households in Singapore. I\'m wondering if a community effort aspect can be roped in, just like how certain suburb communities overseas have a point person for compost, or individuals can bring their compost to farmers\' markets. Maybe RCs/CCs.
