Ecocentive

Problem Statement

The average Singaporean generates over 8 tonnes of carbon emissions annually, more than twice the world’s average, and more than four times the target to maintain a sustainable footprint.

How can we reduce our carbon footprint and build better eco-habits individually and as a nation?

Project Description

ecocentive aims to create a marketplace platform that verifies the purchase of eco-actions between individual eco-actors and eco-minded organisations.

They will reward individual eco-actions through monetary rewards proportional to their carbon impact and become a certified channel for eco-minded organisations to promote and financially support civic eco-sustainability. The impact of these eco-actions will be validated and measured through IOT technology and research-based algorithms.

Its too hard to tell as every product bears different environmental costs. I don\'t think it should be reparative in nature where profits are used on ESG spending post production, but the environmental cost should be included in the product itself with the costs borne 50-50 by the producer and customer.

I think it’s a good idea to give incentives as it is an easy way to help people adapt to such changes as people love incentives! One thing you could do is to create more awareness of wastefulness as sometimes I see people buy one plastic water bottle every day! That is incredibly wasteful and could be easily solved by just carrying your own reusable bottle.

One concern is how to continually involve the general public, who do not see the urgency of environmental sustainability, in your project. The project description seems to imply an economic ecosystem that could be at risk of becoming an excluded system supported and engaged solely by parties that are already invested in environmental issues which wouldn\'t change much on a societal impact level.

In addition to monetary incentives, would it be useful to help companies and industries identify ESG-actions and/or best practices that are also cost-saving in nature (e.g. economies of scale in pooling deliveries and purchases)? Financial incentives may be passed on to consumers (e.g. Zalora/Shopee to offer a ESG delivery option where items can be pooled and deliver to the same postal code on a later date, thereby saving trips and incurring lower fees for customers who are not in a rush to receive their products) It may also be useful to consider how some companies may naturally be in high carbon footprint industries. Complementing the marketplace with research on best ESG practices may help companies work towards such efforts. You may also wish to seek endorsements from various business associations on the viability of such ESG efforts and/or make it available to consumers so that it features prominently in their purchase decisions (e.g. paper packaging instead of plastic, encourage can recycling)

If eco actions are based on voluntary individual actions, maningful and sustainable participation will hardly be achieved. Cost to environment should be internalised within product cost

The idea sounds promising. Team can consider raising awareness and getting children interested in this (e.g., partnering schools or gamifying eco-actions) so that they have a habit of going green from young.

The issue with eco-minded organizations and eco-related goals is that there is no transparency. Down to the core, every organization has money-making as its top priority. Unless this benefits their profits, they won\'t be able to commit 100%, which often results in greenwashing. An improvement would be to provide some of that transparency behind the scenes, perhaps reveal a certain range of carbon emissions each product cost. Have to figure out a way to appeal to the money-minded organizations so that this would not be to waste.

How can you differentiate or collaborate with other industry partners out there doing something similar? Perhaps focus on a particular segment within the marketplace first and scale up gradually e.g. featuring sustainable food business followed by sustainable fashion retailers etc. Who knows, along the way, you may find your differentiating factor! :)

improve through greater public education to generate greater awareness of our individual impacts on the environment and greater emphasis on how each of us can play a part from young so that the young will grow up to become more environmentally conscious and instil a greater sense of awareness
