Problem Statement

Improper social media usage contributes to mental health concerns such as depression, anxiety, body dissatisfaction, and more.

How might we promote a healthier relationship with digital technology/ social media for youths, that benefits rather than harms our mental well-being?

Project Description

Deko aims to revolutionise mental health education in classrooms.

The team will equip educators (for primary & secondary students) with tools to help educators make learning about mental health fun with art, provide information in bite-sized pieces and facilitate application in students’ daily lives.

mmm social media is as bad as you make it I uses to spend social .edit very negatively but now not so much i am less affected by my peers and trying to keep up with what they follow and I follow accounts that genuinely inspire me but then youths are more likely to be influenced so in that aspect more likely a negative impact

In response to "What resources/services would you wish to have to educate youths about proper social media usage?"

Proper education on digital literacy and the ability to discern reliability of information. Not all youths take history lessons where these skills are taught, so having classes on verifying news sources or social media marketing will enable students to be more aware of the intentions of the internet world.

Good. It helps me to vent my feelings and frustrations. It also helps me to connect with like-minded individuals who are going through similar mental health issues as me, which makes me feel validated and less alone. I have learnt much more about mental health from social media compared to other formal channels.

Social media is definitely doing both good and bad and it’s not exactly mutually exclusive in this case. However, I would say that social media is just the gun and real fault lies with people who are triggering it. So the wrong is definitely in the usage of social media.

In response to "Do you believe that social media is doing more good or bad for your mental health and well-being?"

I would say both good and bad. Good because it keeps me apprised of updates/important news when friends share them (eg resharing of today online articles on their IG story), or when I can share my frustrations/good news/education content with friends or vice versa (eg need a listening ear when I encounter a bad boss, good news on a new job role, useful information about autism) as these help me get things off my chest and at the same time, make me feel like I’m not living a hermit’s life without awareness of my friends’ circumstances, world news and that they know about my situation, where applicable. It can be negative for my mental health and well-being when I see posts from influencers who show off what they can afford and have, even if they purchase items with their own money, because then it creates a feeling on inadequacy and a need to keep up with the jones. When one cant get what they have, it may cause the person to feel insecure, angry with their own earning power…etc. So all in all, social media can be both good and bad but education can help to mitigate the negative impacts through creation of awareness and constant reminders not to take what one sees on social media at face value because often, life isnt like what it seems on the gram.

Checklists such as ‘How aware am I that social media content does not accurately portray what goes on in real life’ can be helpful for youths to be more self aware about how their mental wellbeing and health can be impacted by social media use, services such as IG campaigns on healthy social media use would be good.

I feel like social media is doing more good than bad for me. I choose to use social media wisely instead of careless getting myself into situations i don’t want to be in. I try to avoid as much cyber fights as possible and inform a trusted adult if needed. Most of my media is used to text my friends and my loved ones. Of course i do have apps to entertain me when i’m bored. I am also not the type to get influenced easily so I don’t really follow things i don’t like.

In response to "Do you believe that social media is doing more good or bad for your mental health and well-being?"

I think it’s neutral, depends on how much you use it.

In response to "What resources/services would you wish to have to educate youths about proper social media usage?"

Cancel culture. Trolls. Online hate. Sexual grooming. Sexting. Resources that deal and outline such dangers would be good online and offline.

Teach them socil media can be kind, to be kind. but yes social mediabliteracy is important please also think of ways to help the parents as well, parents may default to screen time/ social media usage to keep kids entertained help parents to find a win win strategy in this current era, one cannot be separated from social media but teaching then to be mindful and intentional with it are they scrolling because they are bored.or they genuinely want to keep up with friends are there better ways to keep up with friends? or merely want a distraction

Programs can include time management and character building segments, to further protect youths from excessive social media usage that can lead to depression, anxiety, body dissatisfaction, and more.

I think “proper” social media usage sounds extremely condescending. I think you should use terms like “promoting healthier social media usage” instead.

I can\'t really tell that your goal is social media education from visiting your website at first glance.

I believe that social media literacy should be incorporated into the daily educational life’s of the youths. I wish there would be more solid information that I could spread to the people around me. Because I am aware that people know a lot about the scams , fake news and consequences of improper usage of social media but only briefly. It would really help if there is a way we can be brought closer to the problem. The urgency and practical solutions to tackle this problem to be provided as well. I would suggest that instead of using just the team’s brain, you guys could come up with challenges or something and motivate people to share their tips on using social media in a healthy way or something like that.

i think that youths (especially those in primary/secondary school) may not take the workshops seriously as some of them may not have witnessed the potential mental damage that comes with excessive social media usage. if you guys could share personal stories or case studies to help them draw a direct link between social media and mental health, that\'ll help greatly!

Education is important but perhaps you can frame this more as an intervention. you might want to read up about WISE INTERVENTIONS, which are demonstrated to have the potential to change behavior. This will also minimize overlap with existing efforts, such as the cyber wellness talks that currently take place in schools

The creating awareness through education is really a nice initiative but I would also love to see more Creative workshops or engaging activities that I could learn this through. Also you guys could collaborate with places like NLB to conduct workshops as well.

This is a cute and unique idea! Perhaps the young artists can choose to sell their art via art prints to raise funds for mental health initiatives and campaigns held by charities, which would further bring the campaign to greater heights

Animations can be helpful if the message on appropriate social media use is clearly demonstrated in the clips/art. However, such a medium may be less attractive to youths who may not have an interest in art/animation, or feel that they dont have what it takes to create one. To address the latter, maybe links to free animation creation sites can be included to help them get started and provide a sense of empowerment after the B2B programme has ended. This also encourages continuity beyond the programme. For the former, perhaps, different genres of animation can be created to pique their interests (eg not just cute images but perhaps even realistic images, videos) might be useful to capture the attention of the larger target audience.

It looks interesting as now mental health issues can get wider outreach through mediums like animations and people can have a say on these issues through creating comics strips to share their thoughts on the issue. I think a feedback form can be provided so users can leave their thoughts on the usefulness of the art and what works for them.

i wish social media in general could be less about the numbers and more casual. i think although using artistic mediums is a fresh approach towards mental wellbeing, it could still lead to the same issues of comparison which is detrimental for each other\'s mental health as some who aren\'t as artistically-inclined would feel inferior. however, it could even be using .gifs or stickers to create comic strips and animation to help pull down the benchmark and make this proposed programme more accessible and helpful for everyone!

I like how drawing, animation and comics is used to better youth mental health and their use of social media. perhaps one thing to explore is how to link the drawings to effect changes in their use of social media and their behaviour. e.g. there could be a key message to raise awareness about that the students have to compete and try to create something to tell that specific message. eg what to do when you encounter cyber bullying/ what to do when you feel inferior about yourself/body dissatisfaction.

Not really clear how your solution helps mitigate the mental health problems. I only see it bringing about more awareness. Perhaps a clearer description would be better.

- How would the artistic medium educate the audience on proper social media usage? - How to ensure that the audience apply what they learn from the session? - How to reinforce what they have learnt?

Educate youths about proper social media usage through interactive, educative and kid-friendly video content such as Youtube and TikTok

In order to have a holistic curriculum, I think Deko should have some form of education on these potential mental health issues as well as how to cope with it.

Consider a side focus on building up users\' self-esteem and awareness such that the onus is not only on them and publishing the improper content, but also how to guard themselves from being influenced as well?

The learning narrative is vital to the success of this project - while the medium of communication is interesting and good to have, the content itself is more important to solve this concern. All the best!

Definitely an excellent platform for youths to showcase their art talent! How about also having workshops for parents of the youths?Through that, we can encourage parents to participate with the youths and have family bonding too :)

Maybe if the comics can be published in a book for participants to keep as a memory?
