Problem Statement

After graduation, many youths start to feel isolated from their community. Unlike campus life, there are few established young adult communities in our society, leading to few opportunities for young people who share common interests to connect meaningfully.

How can we improve youth’s mental well-being and social support?

Project Description

Conexa aims to help youths form peer support groups to improve their mental well-being.

Through partnering with organisations that offer activities such as sports, Conexa will bring together 3-4 people in a Telegram chat group who have indicated the same interests to engage in an activity together.

The group can use the chat group to arrange pre- and post-activities to encourage bonding and a group leader will be selected to promote cohesion and a safe space for members. Group activities will have a mental health focus.

trying out new hobbies is fine but depends on individual\'s interest as well. main concern is the platform to find people with similar interest, someone to lead/ guide that interest, and the cost of doing this new hobbies (time and money).

Yes. It’s often very scary and makes me feel vulnerable as well. However, once I get started, it becomes easier to adjust and find something in those activities to connect with.

Instead of virtual activities , physical meet-ups such as simply having lunch together , is something that has significantly shown effect on youths. Even though it’s a little impossible now and then, even occasional activities can help them out with their mental peace.

I had tried to encourage my former students to approach me whenever they faced any mental health challenges. It took awhile to gain their trust in this aspect but eventually, they opened up quite readily and shared in a forthcoming manner. I also think that mental health for youths can be improved by educating the older generation that this is not a taboo subject and that there is nothing to be ashamed of so that the younger generation will be more willing and open to share their challenges with them.

I think by participating in various events, hobbies, interest so they can know better what suits or fits them best and gathering learning and friendship in the process. I think school offers very limited friendship circle limited to class room and also cohort or similar streams e.g science students.

yes, especially because the sport/activity may be niche(therefore very hard to find someone to sign up with, or very few options to choose from, or prohibitively expensive) and the kiasu singaporean mindset of what if i waste money on something i dont like enough to continue

better peer & tutor(as in adult) support, as sometimes the family is the reason behind poor mental wellbeing(they are unsupportive or even abusive). on top of better support, it would be good to better legitimise such support so that they can also be a voice for the youth too in situations where the youth may be disempowered from speaking up

Yes, I think that a new environment and meeting new people will always be somehow nerve wrecking, regardless whether you are extroverted or introverted. Especially for people in Asian culture, we are afraid of embarrassing ourselves while trying something new (since we will be bad at it, we will likely fail, which is embarrassing)

In response to "What are some successful ways that you have tried or think can improve the mental well-being of youths?"

First, I think destigmatisation of mental health is very successful in terms of raising awareness and holding more conversations about mental health amongst youth. I think it is generally less taboo and more youths are accommodating towards persons will mental health issues than the past. This alleviates a lot of society-induced shame towards mental health and will significantly reduce the mental burden for many youths. Secondly, a good work-life balance is important. Taking a break and having fun without worrying about work at all allows us to take a breather and have the strength to continue through hardships.

With academics being a key potential source of stress that could affect the mental well-being of youth, perhaps bringing together a small group of individuals that share a common goal to partake in both study and play would be a good way to foster a connection and improve their mental well-being.

it can bebhard to actively make friends. to share the same interest with one another and trying to click further beyond that initial activity it\'s at least a good start to try but as an youth to adult helping them to transition fully is important too, the bills the financial literacy, insurance health, job searches and also letting them know it is okay that old friendships are lost people may and will choose to spend their energy on their things that they value more having a space where one can drop in and leave with no pressures is important too as and when they need some support

unlike other youth mental health projects i seen, your project targets the young working adults, whom i do personally think that their mental health are too neglected by the others. i like the idea of providing a platform for people of the similar interest to connect and to support each other. I am not sure what kind of mental health activities you have in mind so im not able to comment much on that. The group leader has to be trained to facilitate the activity if mental health is of concern though. Time, money and distance might be potential concerns for young working adults to join the activities. you do not want to create a support group for only those who are well to do.

I don\'t see the need for it because youths are likely to step into their career paths after graduation. They will be forming connections with people more related to their work and other professionals. And within their work, there are interest groups that companies have that workers can be involved in.

I really believe this would be a great opportunity to make friends and connect as well. So I was thinking of a bigger group that could go out together and not only just based on their shared interests but also their availability and stuff. You guys could ask for scrutinized details that would help create a more interconnected community. You guys can even introduce activities on your own and maybe partner with some organizations or companies that could offer interesting activities at a smaller price. This can be targeted at school students and the youths in Singapore whom seem to experience mental health issues more often.

With COVID-19, there are fewer opportunities for people to meet new friends, so this is an important and no-regrets initiative. I would try to think of how you can sustain these interactions as opposed to just having one-off activities, in order for this to have a more direct connection to the issue of mental health (as opposed to simply serving as a social platform)

img placeholder

I think something that can be improved is adding in a moderator or facilitator at the beginning to kickstart the group chat in case anyone is too shy to speak up, and to prevent any negative interaction amongst members that might adversely impact others\' mental health which might go against the purpose of the whole group chat.

I like the idea of having a leader to oversee the group and to ensure that a safe space is created for the youths to share. I am wondering how the group can encourage quieter members to speak up in the telegram chats. From past experiences, each telegram group would have quieter members who only share when asked to. Will there be training for the leaders so that they are able to better facilitate in these telegram groups? Also, will any of these leaders be trained in mental health first aid or psychology in a manner that they know what to say or how to react in certain circumstances (e.g. when someone says that they are very depressed)?

I think there are many families that do not fall under the above categories that are also vulnerable group. E.g middle income families also faces issues and it is seldom highlighted as they are deemed not part of the social group that seems to need help. I think more research can be done on those who are seeking help to see why they are facing the issues. Most problems starts when they are in school and often the stress is continued into work , family life and not having a good support network cause the problem to further worsen. I think more framework is needed for participants to join the telegram and how it can help them.

i like the idea of getting youths together to take part in activities together! perhaps beyond planning and organising for a group of youths to take part in activities, a community can be built where in the future, other youths can step up and create their own smaller telegram groups to start activities of their own so that the impact of the project will not be limited to what you team can afford( in terms of time and energy) to organise and plan for.

It\'s a good idea! Perhaps some accountability? I guess that is what the group leader is there for, but I think it would be important to keep track of the group dynamics/how the levels of interest have been fluctuating, and resultantly strategies to deal with various situations. perhaps the group leader could undergo some training so that they can better manage such situations?

In response to "How Can We Improve?"

Firstly, I think you should allow people to sign up in pairs so that for those who are deeply uncomfortable with being alone, they can have a friend to be alongside with them for the activity. Secondly, I think there can be some incentives for certain activities (eg. discount from ice skating or 2 hour free cycling at ECP) so that people will be incentivised to participate instead of just asking their friends out (status quo).
