Problem Statement

The proliferation of dangers in the online world and dependency on mobile devices can lead to physical and mental health issues. On top of this, the opportunity to give is lacking due to insufficient time or money.

How can we improve our personal well-being while promoting the gift of giving?

Project Description

BetterUs aims to bring forward a better and innovative solution to the rising concern of addiction to mobile devices and the lack of altruism in the community.

The team will develop a mobile application that encourages users to reduce usage of their phones through rewarding them with virtual currencies to exchange for tangible donations to give back to the society.

Not really anything, but it would be good if I can see how much I was able to help from giving back to the society.

point system so we get something back in exchange. because people probably do not like to make an additional effort to give back when they are so busy with their lives. incentivising them with something they can exchange with points earned eg. grabfood vouchers, can be more appealing

know who and how my donation/ give back is used. Get progress updates on the help provided. For example, if i donate for a needy child, i would like to know a frequent update of how is he doing and would definitely want to see that the donation or give back is able to improve that child\'s life. even better if i receive a personal thank you message by that person but this cannot be forced. but with these kind of personal messages will definitely encourage the donor to make more donations or give back

Having a higher income. Currently, I am still paying off my study loans and I find it challenging to sustain my own living expenses so I do cut back on donations. I do work longer hours to do better in my work in hopes of getting a raise but that creates poor work life balance and reduces my ability to give back through volunteerism. So it is a bit of a vicious cycle for me. Another incentive to me would be having opportunities to meet others when giving back to society so that it can help me develop a sense of community as well.

Meal coupons/discount codes would be a good incentive I feel as it may create the idea in my mind that I am not losing money through donation, since I am “getting it back” through discounts on other things. And this is good as despite being given the discount or coupon, i may not necessarily have the time or the desire to use it before it expires. In conclusion I would’ve donated with the impression that I would be getting a “cash back” but it will only be true if I do end up using the coupon/discounts. This idea alone would encourage me to donate or give back more often.

In response to "How Can We Improve?"

I really like this idea of reducing the use of phone to earn points that can be used for donations. It feels similar to another app called forest where people can \"plant\" virtual trees by focusing and not using their phone for a period of time. However, the meaning of it kinda disappears after some time and it gets boring. So allowing people to give back to society by reducing phone usage feels like a more worthy reward. I suggest another way people can be earning points for the donations can be through posting about the campaigns and raising awareness on social media. Since this solution is to prevent people from overusing their digital devices, might as well make full use of the time spent when not focusing on activities. I believe it helps people to understand the use of this software and willingly participate too. maybe for the charity donations, people/organisations can apply to create their own campaigns or fundraising, thus creating another platform for those in need to easily reach out for help. especially for fundraising, once the funds have hit the desired amount, those who did their part in donating can have it as an achievement that can be shared online, and can also earn additional points or to personalise their trees or unlock new features in the software. again, this can serve as a form of motivation for people to carry on reducing their phone usage to give back to society as well as publicise it. lastly, there can be monthly reports on a user\'s progress of their donations, achievements and to check how far their help has reached. for example, if someone donates to a certain charity organisation, the software can include how the donations received has been used, such as buying daily necessities and sharing pictures of those in need who has benefitted from the donations etc. the software can also send virtual thank you cards to let users feel appreciated for the help they have offered. good luck and all the best on your solution!

In response to "How Can We Improve?"

I really like the interface of your app prototype. It\'s clean, neat and user-friendly. Perhaps one other way your team can improve would be to add in some real life images and videos, e.g. of the beneficiary, how they plan to use the donation and why they need the donation. Also, perhaps after the donation is completed, there could be an update on how the donation have benefited the beneficiary (e.g. a picture of the medical equipment purchased and a short description of how it changed the way things are done). I think this will be able to make people more receptive to donating and using the app since we are able to see and obtain updates on where and how the funds are used. Another way your team could improve is to categorize the charity organizations accordingly based on their categories. E.g. Environmental conservation, hospitals, pets, etc, such that it would be easier for people to choose the sectors they are more keen to donate to. Perhaps there could even be an option for people to list the organizations they wish to donate to but are currently not included in the app. Also, perhaps the app can even allow people to curate the organizations they tend to donate to, such as a \'fav list\', so that it will reduce the time spent searching on the app and make the entire donation process more quick and intuitive.

Is the healthy habits only limited to the dependency of mobile devices? it think it should include other habits as well and the ability to track or monitor these activities as well. and the healthy habit should be able to be personalised based on individual\'s usual habit so there is more targeted help to change or improve one\'s habit. for example, have a few survey questions to first identify a person\'s bad habit and give them the list of habits they can improve on based on their bad habits and which one they want to work on and their goal.

Definitely a conversation between the people I’ve managed to help would be very nice. It will further drive me to continue donating knowing that I have made a difference in someone else’s life.

Make the onboarding as simple and quick as possible. Usually I don\'t donate because of lengthy onboarding

It is definitely a very Creative way to allow people to heal from their mental health issues. On top of allowing donations and stuff , you guys could also arrange volunteering programmes for people of all ages and commitments. Working adults nowadays are more willing to volunteer as well. However, often, they face timing and opportunity restrictions. You guys can maybe mitigate this situation by partnering with organizations and coming up with convenient timings that people can volunteer during.

I really like the idea and the designs you came up with! The user interface looks amazing! Perhaps you can consider including in a page where users are able to see the results of their donations - how it has helped someone/created a positive impact to boost positive feelings and increase motivation to take part more consistently!

You could try to strengthen your credentials a lot. Coz the main problem with this kinda apps and initiatives is the trust itself. It would nice to be reassured.

This is a ingenious idea which marries two distinctive challenges (device usage and promoting charity). That said, think about how you can truly inculcate the spirit of giving; otherwise you risk making donations a mere \"afterthought\" that one engages in when it\'s convenient and provided for through an app. You might also need to consider how the funding model will be sustainable in the long term if this project this to scale. Do you expect a foundation to bankroll this or will there be revenue generating elements?

Youths who are working may not have the luxury to put aside their mobile devices as they may have to use them for work. Consider other app-based activities such a doing a virtual workout (increases one’s physical and mental wellbeing), playing a game (helps one to take his mind off work) or sharing healthy meal recipes (improves physical and mental wellbeing) where users can also earn virtual credits to give back while improving their work life balance, rather than just putting their devices away.

Can have more activities or platforms for people to join in the interest of what they will like to give back on and how they can gain rewards or incentive e.g vouchers, plushies, etc to return and commit to the activities. E.g. Green fingers- can encourage a green lifestyle through planting vegetables or tying up with green agricultural companies to let volunteers appreciate a green minimalist lifestyle and why protecting the earth is important. Or how they can share their skills or hobbies with others by teaching others a skill that they love. E.g. Passing on interest of playing badminton, soccer, knitting, cooking, baking, playing guitar etc. Sharing of time and passion with other similar interests people. The interest group can also perform at children homes or at elderly centre.

The app can have a forum page where users can share their experiences or advices to tackle mental well-being and frequent postings will earn them more virtual money for them to use for donation. The app can also include a list of Organisations and their purposes so that users can choose who they want to donate to.

I think it would be great if you guys could add milestone rewards to your app, e.g for every X number of trees the user successfully plants, they unlock certain achievements or they gain bonus points. Additionally, I’m not sure what’s the minimum amount of time required to grow a tree, but perhaps include the option to maybe have the tree grow in a shorter time frame as people nowadays tend to have a lesser attention span, but we would still want to encourage them to focus on their tasks. If the minimum time required to grow the tree is too much from the get-go it may discourage users. Lastly, perhaps instead of a e.g 1hour in one go to grow a tree, maybe within that 1hour the tree gives users 10min breaks a few times so users can take short breathers in between without letting the tree die. Overall I think this prototype is pretty good! I love the simplicity of the UI and the eye catching colours used.

I think the whole idea of being able to give back while improving my own mental wellbeing is so amazing. For example, I use the abillionveg app a lot, where each review of a vegan product I post will grant me a dollar to donate to their verified cause. I think if this app were to come true that it would be very useful and the graphics are really appealing and friendly to further encourage everyone to use as well. This approach is great since it is more cheerful and utilises positive reinforcement to target a dark topic like mental health.

I like how the team is trying to reduce people\'s phone usage while doing good and donating to charity. i am not sure if people will willingly cut down on their phone use to donate money to charity. perhaps more research could be done to understand motivations of volunteers - there is the annual NVPC individual giving survey which has many insights. also, more research could be done to understand how best to change human behaviour(behavioral insights methods) and how best to reduce phone/social media usage. it might then be good to think about these 2 problems separately. and maybe focus on 1 problem if the research shows that they do not complement. the funding to fund such an app for the long-term is not addressed. it seems like it would be difficult for such an app to generate revenue to sustain itself. relying on philanthropy would mean a need for a proof of concept and impact...

Perhaps you need to reword your problem statement to connect the two issues. Much research has shown that altruism like volunteer work can help improve mental well being as it gives you a feeling of belonging/ a sense of purpose in the world. You can add evidence of their research to your pitch to reinforce the idea. There are many platforms available for donation. The organizations shown in your prototype all have their own way of collecting donations, so I wouldn’t include that as a UPS. However, the ability to donate tangibly through app points is interesting. Additionally, it might be beneficial to add a community to the app so that users can compare progress and achievements. Otherwise, it’s hard to maintain motivation. Another way is to add a daily check in feature to encourage daily use. Good work on the prototypes and good luck!

I like the digital reduction idea, which is very much needed in today\'s society. Not sure how rewards can be exchanged for virtual currencies, you\'ll definitely need to get organizations to buy in and come on board. It will be good if you can specify where the donated credits will go to (instead of generic-sounding organizations like SGH or Giving.sg). Many a times, people are deterred in giving to organizations because we don\'t know where our monies or credits will go to. So if you can state the causes/beneficiaries that the tangible donations will go to (eg. support healthcare bills for needy child patients at SGH), that will help to increase confidence and encourage giving.

There is a clash in your problem statement. You are trying to solve 2 issues at once which have no direct connection with each other. Your product description also talks about reducing usage of phones which somehow reduces the effect of the first problem you are trying to tackle. The app seems more to encourage giving and not to solve the first problem which you have stated. I would suggest choosing one to focus on. Also, this problem statement is one you might want to re-evaluate \"the opportunity to give is lacking due to insufficient time or money.\" Ask yourself, do you not donate because u got no money? You don\'t go for volunteer work because you got no time? Most of the time it\'s none of the above but rather we don\'t see the value and need in doing these things. I hope these questions and feedback help you fine tune what you are doing! :)
